We had the good fortune of connecting with Meahsha Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meahsha, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is community. I woke up one day wanting to talk about a book and I had no one that was genuinely interested because my friends and family wasn’t big readers like I was. I decided to run to the internet. Open it and talk freely, not thinking too much of it because like I said, I didn’t think anyone would be interested. And that’s when my growth skyrocketed, and I received so much love because I wasn’t alone. That sense of belonging and mutual enthusiasm has truly been the driving force behind my brand’s success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always loved reading since I was a child, but it became a lost hobby as I became an adult, mother, ect.. life became too fast paced, and it seemed like something I didn’t have time for. I started to feel overwhelmed and I decided to pick up a book for a mental break and I haven’t turned back since. Like I previously mentioned, reading became a really big part of my life and all I wanted to do was talk about it. I decided to create a booktok account and document my journey of falling in love with the reading all over again. That was seven months ago and my account has grown substantially. I like to think that I’ve created a space that brings others happiness. I’m naturally very goofy, corky and weird, and I always bring that to the forefront of my page just authentically being myself while sharing all my favorite book recommendations with my book besties.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Personally I love to eat, majority of the places I’d love to hit would be restaurants such as “seven nineteen” on Manchester, Martins cocina in Inglewood or rosti tuscan kitchen in LA
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out Black Booktok. We get overlooked in a lot of literary spaces so creating a safe space for black readers to discover and discuss books written by us for us is so special. Black Booktok is more than a community, it’s a celebration of our voices, stories, and shared experiences.
