We had the good fortune of connecting with Ury Summers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ury, what inspires you?
Well, I’m probably most inspired by sadness (laughs). I’m a pretty happy person, but for some reason, the vast majority of my writing comes out when I’m sad. There’s this quote from How I Met Your Mother, by Barney Stinson, that goes: ‘When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead.’ It’s a pretty funny scene; it’s not the same case with me, but when I get sad and start a song, there’s this kind of magic that comes in and turns the sadness into this amazing feeling that I don’t think I can explain if you haven’t felt it before. And obviously, there are a million artists who have inspired me a ton—Sum 41, Green Day, blink-182, S*x Pistols. MOD SUN lately—to name a few—and I wouldn’t be making music if it weren’t for some of them.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I grew up in beautiful Basque Country, Europe. Pretty early in life—when I was about 8 years old—I started skateboarding and surfing, in that order. I believe that led me to music later on. The punk rock scene, pop-punk culture, skate culture, and beach life all make sense together.

I developed a love for music relatively late in life—around the age of 15—and I began learning guitar right away; when I love something, I need to be part of it—not just watch from the sidelines.
I was a horrible student who got kicked out of high school at 17 for doing, well, bad things. After that, I transitioned from hating studying to loving it when I had no pressure and could learn what I really enjoyed. English was my least favorite subject, but I went from hating it to becoming a fan of English and got really interested in economics.

I came to LA for the first time in 2013 before returning to Europe and then moving to Nebraska. Now I’ve been living in Los Angeles for several years. Why LA? Well, my favorite things in life are music, movies, skateboarding, surfing, and good weather—and there’s no better place on Earth for that than Los Angeles.

I’ve been making music for over 15 years; however, I started releasing music relatively late—in 2024; better late than never, they say (laughs). I’m very excited about what is coming in the next months and years, and I can’t wait for you all to see it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, I love being the tour guide when I have friends or family visiting the city. I could write a book of amazing things to do in LA, so I’m gonna name just a few. Such a cliché but I love to hike the Runyon Canyon, I go every week! I love to take my visits to movie locations we love and kind of recreate them, such a fun thing to do. I love to eat a Carney’s on Sunset, and have a coffee at Alfred’s, on Melrose Place; in fact I bring my laptop there and edit many of my songs or work on emails there. Also, catch some waves or go for a walk on the beach in Malibu is not a horrible thing to do either.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutouts to Barry King, friend and legendary Hollywood photographer (he has worked with everyone you know), for his incredible support. I would also like to give a shoutout to Monday Potions, the most underrated band in Europe. As a thank you, I’d like to thank my awesome wife for putting up with me and coming all the way to the City of Angels; also to my mom for being the best and friends, and family for always being there.
