We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Hultberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have a very circuitous process for starting my business, it is not like many others. I really never thought I would begin or even own a business but Covid changed that, like so many other small businesses. I studied architecture in college and bought a 1910 Craftsman bungalow 22 years ago. My boyfriend and I had been planning on remodeling our kitchen beginning in April 2020 and then the Covid pandemic hit. We were both fired from our jobs and one night we had a discussion and we decided to bet on ourselves and we moved forward with the remodel. The whole kitchen design is centered around a gorgeous stove that was imported from Italy. I then designed and built the vent hood, I was hooked! In November 2020, I took a woodworking class at Rockler Woodworking just to get out of the house. I had the best time! It seemed to awaken something in me. I started to investigate what the initial investment would be for all the equipment I would need to begin. I bounced the idea off of Erik and told him what I had been thinking, gave him the numbers and he told me to GO FOR IT! I made 6 charcuterie boards that Christmas for family and friends. And I haven’t looked back!!!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We have a passion for art and an eye for style, we aim to craft beautiful and creative products that make our customers feel inspired. Because of my architectural background, I believe this is what sets House of Quail apart from other businesses, we understand the importance of function first. Creating quality products that people can enjoy with ease is our top priority. With a deep love for our craft, we aim to inject that energy and spirit into everything we create-ultimately inspiring joyful moments that leave our customers feeling comforted and uplifted. Our goal is to build pieces that bring people together through crafted culinary experiences-creating unique opportunities that encourage fellowship and lasting connection. No, it has not been easy, but life isn’t easy. I always say you have to go through the low points and the failures in life and business to appreciate the great opportunities and the successes. I am a woman in a very male-dominated industry and that is what I am most proud about, still in todays day and age there are still social norms that exist and people do not believe that I am the woodworker! I am trying to break those norms!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow! That is a difficult question because Sacramento has so much to offer, but I have such a deep connection and love of Napa Valley, we are going there for sure! Our trip would begin at Schramsberg for bubbles and a toast to our trip and then a tasting at Promontory. And no trip to Napa is not complete without eating Mustard’s Grill! A spa day would need to be planned as well, self care is so critical to creativity.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is an incredible community of female small business owners here in Sacramento and they inspired me, took a chance on me, gave me an opportunity when others wouldn’t and have been my biggest cheerleader on this journey! They are my sisters, they celebrate the wins with me, pick me up when I stumble, they make me a stronger woman, a stronger friend, a better partner and sister. We are better together!
