We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendy Nolasco and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wendy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk can be intimidating, but it’s essential for success in any area of our lives. Embracing growth requires an open mind and a willingness to welcome new opportunities and blessings. For instance, if Oprah Winfrey hadn’t taken the risk to leave her job and start her show, she might still be in a role that others deemed best for her, rather than achieving her current success. Ultimately, only you can truly understand and pursue what’s best for you. We must learn to become okay with others not seeing our vision, later they will understand. I have experienced this first hand.

Risk has played a large role in my life and career, during my freshman year of college I decided to pursue a career in makeup. Unfortunately my mother didn’t see my vision. This decision was difficult for her to accept, especially given her and my father’s own experiences as immigrants chasing a better life. We often clashed, her disappointment towards me and lack of support was hard for me. However, after witnessing my dedication through my work with clients and my full-time job, she gradually came around and became increasingly supportive. Today, she is my biggest advocate, and our relationship is stronger than ever, alongside my father, whom I deeply cherish. I am so grateful to have both of their support.

This year has been all about taking risks for me. I prioritized my career outside the department store I worked for, seizing every opportunity, regardless of my work schedule or management’s approval. I’m grateful for each chance I took, as it allowed me to build connections and create impactful experiences with prominent creatives. Had I not embraced these opportunities, I wouldn’t have networked with such influential people or expanded my clientele. I recently took the biggest risk of my life yet and quit my full time job to pursue my Makeup Artist Career. It is my last week at the Nordstrom MAC counter as I am typing this and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I urge others to always take risks and prioritize their own growth, no matter the circumstances and follow your dreams!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist, I have the unique ability to express myself and inspire others to do the same. My creative approach allows me to adapt to the specific needs of various occasions and clients. I believe that art should never feel confining; it empowers me to explore limitless possibilities without fear of judgment. I intentionally avoid anchoring myself to a single makeup style to maintain this freedom. On my page, you will notice a commitment to versatility, as I pride myself on offering a diverse range of makeup styles. Many artists may not provide such variety, but I continually stay updated on the latest trends to deliver exceptional results for my clients. I embrace detailed and dramatic looks and welcome any challenge that comes my way.

I am genuinely excited for this new chapter as a full-time freelancer, which offers me the freedom I have long sought. My previous retail experience often felt restrictive, but I am proud of the progress I have made. While I recognize that I still have further to go, reaching this point has required resilience.I faced numerous challenges along the way, including negativity from peers, the loss of friendships, and financial hardships. Despite these obstacles, I remained committed to maintaining a positive outlook and persevering. I believe that self-confidence is crucial; when you believe in yourself, others will too.

I have learned many valuable lessons along the way, with one of the most important being the significance of staying calm and positive. Maintaining a positive mindset is essential, as circumstances often unfold as they are meant to. I have found that reacting impulsively rarely changes the outcome, and staying composed leads to better results.

I hope to inspire others with the understanding that no dream is too big or unrealistic. While challenges may arise, we have the power to overcome them and continue moving forward. Keep your foot on the pedal and don’t look back.
