We had the good fortune of connecting with Matty Whitmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matty, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Through the 22 years I have been teaching yoga and group fitness classes and personal training as well, I think the most important factor for me has been consistency and perseverance. I have watched the shape of this niche change over the years, and have adjusted how I teach and when, but one thing that stays the same is that I keep showing up for my students every day no matter if there are 2 students or 52 students. When you love what you do, it’s easy to be persistent-it is the key.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I teach group fitness classes like yoga or group circuit training. I also am a personal trainer. I believe what makes me stand out is that my classes are about fun music, dancing, and a carefree vibe as much as they are about pushing physical limits. Of course my students talk about getting a full body work out, but everyone expects to get that when they show up at any fitness class. I go against the grain of a typical Los Angeles yogi or fitness guru and don’t take myself or getting in shape too seriously. I focus on fun and try to get my students to do the same. Grab some push ups, or don’t-either way there is nothing to worry about. Another factor that has lifted my career is staying flexible and willing. I say yes to all kinds of opportunities and have met some amazing people through staying open-minded.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take a friend and hit the Santa Monica stairs on 4th and Adelaide, City Spa for thermal therapy, one of the Malibu Beaches like Westwards, any hike in the Santa Monica mountains, and Koreatown for Korean BBQ and Korean. Spas. I would make sure to get in some pickleball and ping pong as well!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Diana Poff is the current Manager of Bay Club, Santa Monica, but I met her when she worked at Pacific Athletic Club/Spectrum/Bay Club Pacific Palisades. She was the first one to give me a shot and the opportunity to embark on this career path. She believed in me even when there was nothing to believe in. To this day, when I am struggling to find strength within myself, I somehow manage to achieve it for her. She is still there for me 20+ years later as my friend, ally, family, and forever support system.
