We had the good fortune of connecting with Chinweizu Oham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chinweizu, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always had a love of entertaining people. Growing up, I always sought out various avenues to explore my creativity. Watching other people entertain brought me so much joy, and I would see how they would positively impact others, and I wanted to do that. Acting and creating content has helped me with that. I know it is what I am best at. I love to make people laugh and tell stories. That is a way to bring people together. Telling my family an exaggerated tale of my day when I would come home from school always brought me joy, and I saw how they would be interested in hearing my stories. Acting and making videos is an outlet for me, especially on a hard day, it makes me happy, and I want to make others happy as well.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I grew up in Nigeria, and seeking an entertainment career is not widely considered. But, when I was about 10, I starred in and helped create a short for a film club in school I joined. And from then on, I was hooked. I always knew I wanted an entertainment career, but it took me a while to admit it out loud. Finally, I was able to, and my parents were super supportive. I decided to pursue a BFA in Acting for Film, graduating from quite a challenging program. Since graduating, it has not been easy. This is a very challenging career. You are not always sure when you’re next job will be or what happens next. And I have struggled with not knowing for the past year. What has helped me is the constant reminder that I am meant to be doing this. And in this time, I am building myself as a creative. I have started posting on TikTok, and I am in the process of creating a talk show that will be shared on social media. this is something I am very excited about. I want to bring laughter into the world and share who I am in any way that I can, and this show and the other things I am creating are a great way to do that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
New York is a melting pot of cultures, and it has so many things to do that a week is just not enough time. I love to do things that involve food, so most of my favorite places involve food. One place we will have to stop by is Ainslie in Williamsburg for a bottomless brunch. The music is always great, the ambiance and the vibe are just amazing. And the food is spectacular. Another great spot we will have to visit is Bergdorf Goodman for afternoon tea. And that place is amazing because you can walk through all the floors and window shops. And it is also right on 5th Avenue and you can take a nice stroll past all the stores. It is especially best during Christmas time. For a nice relaxing evening dessert and coffee, we will visit Martha’s Country Bakery in either Williamsburg or Forest Hills because those locations are big. The cakes are really good and they have a great matcha latte. If you’re visiting, you cannot leave without seeing a Broadway show. Right now, The Outsiders is the best show on Broadway.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has always believed in me. I want to shout them out. They supported me in getting my BFA in Acting for Film and my professional career. I would not be here without them. I also want to shout out Lauren Brickman, my former advisor from school. Even after graduating, she is constantly reaching out to me answering questions I have, and guiding me.
