We had the good fortune of connecting with Morganico Dotcom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi mORGANICo, how do you think about risk?
My work chainsawing tree sculptures is very risky. People have died doing what I have been successful in doing. Lucky for me on this project I only sustained 3 fractured ribs & a stab wound to the hand ( a ladder slipped out from 12ft height causing a fall & a razor sharp carving knife slipped in 2 different accidents ) . So now I can say it’s been worth it, as BBC Radio & a national newspaper are taking an interest in the totem pole sculpture as well as a documentary film being made about it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
mORGANICo art is now appreciated in several countries around the world so it’s been a wonderful experience to be able to contribute to the cultural pools of cities beyond my hometown.

My love of skateboarding basically kickstarted my public art career when I spent 2 years as a volunteer fundraising for a mini ramp to be built in our local skatepark & what I painted on the back of that ramp on the opening day led to me getting big public mural commissions & tree carving sculpture work

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to see an art show at the chelsea arts club & enjoy a fancy dinner there, then head to the coast to spend time in nature enjoying the fresh air by the sea. Also climbing a mountain to get some good exercise & remember the importance of setting challenging but achievable goals for building our strength of character. There’s lots of good museums to visit too

Shout out to friends Article Flex & MC Proper Pete that helped the project so much & all the friendly local people who came to visit & say how much they appreciate the renovation of this treasured community sculpture. Thank you to all those close to me who put up with my complaining moments when things were tough & I was covered in dirt, sawdust & oil lol
