We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Marcus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, why did you pursue a creative career?
Most people see the world around them and take it at face value. That can mean different things to different people, but the common theme is that things are accepted as “thats the way things are”. As a very young child, I was curious about WHY things are the way they are: the cultural norms we have, the clothes we wear, the way we talk, the technology we have. For my entire life, I’ve wanted to uncover the meaning behind, well, everything! This curiosity also extends to the natural world, and all of it coalesces together in a swirling mass in my brain and drives me to be the storyteller that I’ve worked to become. I love to tell purposeful stories through the written word and visual media. Those stories can take many different forms, from documentary facts, to the emotional pull of a fictional narrative film. I’ll always be curious.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I work with friends I’ve known for a long time. I’ve known one of my business partners, Randy, since we were arbitrarily paired up in our freshman college dorm room. We’ve been through A LOT, both personally and professionally. My other business partner, Ray, has been a good friend since 2009. Time flies, clichéd to say, but its so true. The three of us are like family. We call each out with constructive criticism, we share ideas, we hold each other accountable, we elevate each other, and when things aren’t great, we support each other.

Clients have said over and over that they marvel at our communication skills, our calm demeanor, and the quality of the work we do. It all comes from that trust we’ve built with us three, and it extends to everyone we work with, both new connections and old friends. We’ve learned the importance of asking questions when needed, being sure to listen, to never stop learning, and to not be afraid to try something new.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is a real place. I know that, being born here and growing up here. So many people in the United States and across the planet think it’s just a pop-culture factory manufacturing content, but for those who want to get a real sense of place, there is so much to experience. My friends are all into different things, so the ideal trip would depend on who was visiting me. It could include time at the beach, swimming, napping in the sun, and having a picnic. It could be visiting the Hollywood Farmers Market and spending days in vintage stores. It could be finding the coolest spots to eat, from street food to a fine restaurant. It could be hiking in nature, or visiting historic landmarks. Maybe a concert at the Greek Theater, or visiting Magic Mountain and Universal Studios. A trip to the Getty Museum is always enjoyable. Me? I like all things I wrote about here, and especially love it if a friend has something new I didn’t know about to go check out.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve got to give a shoutout to a few people who have been instrumental in journey. My great uncle, Ray Goldstone, who was a television writer and a great storyteller. He was the one who noticed my curiosity and artistic inclinations when I was barely old enough to talk and encouraged me from an early age.
My grandmother, Ann Marcus, who was always loving and supportive. She was also an Emmy winning writer for TV and worked on many famous shows. She taught me how to screenwrite. I also inherited much of her wit and sense of humor.
And I am fortunate to have people even now whose support and belief in my ability and what my partners, colleagues, and friends can all do together is very heartfelt. Matt and Kathy Mallinson were clients, then friends, and are now family. They’ve opened a whole chapter of what we can do creatively and successfully, and I am sincerely grateful to have them both in my life.
