We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Kaye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
QUESTION ANSWERED: “What was your thought process in deciding to join the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation team as an Executive Director?

I was recruited by the Foundation, and as I moved through the process I was inspired by the significant progress the Foundation had already made in the Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis space…and I found groundwork they were laying for the future impressive. The Foundation is a $92 million nonprofit organization that has played a critical role in every major research breakthrough for IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). I was excited by their forward-thinking and innovative approach with current initiatives, such as IBD Plexus, which is pioneering in scope with its biorepository of samples and clinical data from IBD patients to help accelerate research for a cure.

I was also very impressed by the culture of the Foundation, and it was striking to me how people spoke about one another and how supportive they were of each other, even during the interview process. I’m happy to say my intuition was correct, and this is one of the best company cultures I’ve had the pleasure of working in, in either the non-profit or for-profit space.

What should our readers know about your business?
We are the only ones in the IBD space who are fighting to cure Crohn’s disease and ulcerative
colitis, not just treat it. As such, we venture into uncharted territories in our quest, and the
Foundation has invested more than half a billion dollars in research to date for cures and
treatments to improve the lives of patients and their families. This means that we are constantly
pushing the envelope to move forward quickly to find the best treatments, therapies, research-
based holistic options, medications, and devices that will make a positive impact on patients’
lives.. We are the only organization making major investments to finally understand the actual
role diet and nutrition play in the progression of IBD, and our funding has helped to identify
hundreds of IBD biomarkers, which are currently being investigated to bring personalized
treatments and therapies to market for IBD patients.
Speed and quick action are imperative, particularly with IBD diseases rapidly increasing
worldwide – Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are now considered global emergence
diseases by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is estimated that 1 in 100 people have these
debilitating diseases, with a deeply concerning increase in children in particular. When you take
into account family, friends, and co-workers – countless more are affected by these diseases
every day. We simply don’t have time to waste.
