We had the good fortune of connecting with Roman Slappey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roman, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe risks are a necessity when it comes to wanting to be successful in any field. Whether they’re a big or small risk varies from person to person. Taking risks has played a large part in my life. I consider myself to be a confident, positive optimististic person. So, whether something has a 1% or 100% chance of success, I’m going to take the risk if it’s something I really want. I’m not too worried about how much work/time it will take. Just need to take that first step, which is the risk most people are afraid of.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In terms of my art, I am still trying to find my style. It’s an ongoing process. My illustrations are steadily improving. I’ve been trying to illustrate regular everyday activities but also trying to capture a certain mood and feeling from the colors and tone. My focus is Character Design but I believe background art, props and color can enhance what the viewer is feeling. I am most proud of where I am currently in my life. I never thought I’d be living in Los Angeles away from all of my family, because moving across the country alone is a big risk. Once I decided I wanted to work in Art/Animation, I did my research on areas in the US. I studied and practiced Character Design and Animation everyday. I still do, and it led me to California. Trying to make it as a creative in any field is not easy and can make you question if you’re actually good enough, because art is subjective and imposter syndrome/depression can set in for a lot of people. I tell myself everyday that this is not suppose to be easy. It keeps me from getting to down on myself. I want the world to know that artist have value, feelings, emotions and lives. So pay artists what they’re worth and give them a chance to prove themselves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So, I’d take them to the Griffith Observatory, because it’s dope and it has an amazing view of the city and the Hollywood sign. Dodgers or Lakers game depending on what time of the year. I’d find a comedy show to go to. A museum or art show as well. Universal Studios and Disneyland are always an option. Cant forget the beach or Santa Monica Pier. I cant say any particular bars or restaurants because they’re so many to choose from. Thats only the tourist stuff, but they’re are so weekly and monthly events happening that we could go to.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The people who deserve the credit in my story would definitely be my friends and family for their support in my art journey. Along with the people I’ve met while living in Los Angeles for almost 3 years. There are a few people I want to give a special shoutout to. My brother was the one who intitially got me to seriously pursue art 5 years ago. Shoutout to you Nate! Shoutout to my mom and youngest brother for helping me move from Detroit to Los Angeles. Shoutout to my Dad, Granddad and cousin Christopher (may they rest in peace) for supporting and encouranging me to go after my dreams and always having my back!
