Meet Gillian Brown | Marine Veteran & NYFA Film Student

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gillian Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gillian, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think my work/life balance has changed a lot for sure. Now, that I am older, experienced certain things and traveled pretty far; I understand it is important get some me time in when I can. Now that being said, my ambition and drive hasn’t diminished at all. I just understand now, that taking a little R&R from time to time is essential for myself and headspace.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think there is a type of innocence to me creatively. I am just starting out in this vastly challenging film industry, and there is simply no ego involved because I am soaking up as much knowledge as I can. The sheer amount of ideas and worlds I have created in my head is insane. I can’t wait to bring those to life further on down the road. I would say, the one challenge I can see myself facing is the emotional side and putting yourself within your stories. Going forward, I would love to be able to connect more within myself so the stories I create are just more impactful as a whole.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh first things first is definitely film studio tours! Being able to be surrounded by history and all that cinema that you fell in love with is insane. I would also take them out of the city just a bit and hike up and around the surrounding trails to get a glimpse of the beautiful sunset LA has. There are so many museums for film and art, it’s so cool!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m going to say two. Two of the biggest inspirations are my parents and the marine corps. My parents have supported me in all of the ups and downs I’ve went through in life. From deploying in the marines to deciding to go to film school, their constant dedication and support I’m so grateful for. I know I always have a home to return to. As for the Marine Corps, though it was the toughest thing I ever did, the lessons and experiences I got is unmatched. From learning, discipline, punctuality, loyalty and hard work; it has definitely catapulted me forward in life.
