What’s the right work-life balance for you?

Our community is filled with hard-working, high achieving entrepreneurs and creatives and so work-life balance is a complicated, but highly relevant topic. We’ve shared some responses from the community about work life balance and how their views have evolved over time below.

Work life balance can be tricky because often what I do for passion and what I do for work overlap. I’m still deciding whether or not the goal is for them to be one and the same– I think it is. Currently, I’m freelancing and it’s the first time in my life I’ve had this much control of my schedule… which is a double edged sword. Since the time I was five up until graduating from Berklee last year, I had been accustomed to my “work / life balance” being divided between assignments and semesters. It’s been both exciting and daunting to begin this new chapter where I get to decide when I work, when I play, and when I rest. I look forward to continuing to find and anchor myself in this balance. I think my work/life balance has changed a lot for sure. Now, that I am older, experienced certain things and traveled pretty far; I understand it is important get some me time in when I can. Now that being said, my ambition and drive hasn’t diminished at all. I just understand now, that taking a little R&R from time to time is essential for myself and headspace. Read more>>

Work and life. I’ve always tried to embody that phrase “work to live, not live to work”, while continuously trying to work on myself professionally as a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT). This perspective was back when I was unmarried with no kids. As an occupational therapist, the foundation of our profession is occupational balance. In addition to spending time in your vocational occupation (work), in order to function effectively, you must also have an equal amount of time also in your other meaningful occupations (role as a partner, leisure, sleep).
