Meet Korbin Brown | Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Korbin Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Korbin, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work-life balance is one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced for all the wrong reasons. I love what I do and I’m so blessed and happy that I get to wake up every morning and make films with my peers and a few of my friends. Because work has become somewhat of a playhouse for me balancing the life part is where I struggle. It’s easy for me to be on set 7 days a week for 12 hours a day because that’s what I love to do and I don’t feel like I’m at work when I’m working but that type of life simply isn’t sustainable to my health or the outside relationships I have. As I’ve grown a little older I’ve had to find constructive ways to restrain myself from overworking myself at what I love. I’ve had to learn it’s okay not to sleep eat and breathe filmmaking.
Now, I think of work-life balance as how much time I can commit to work without having to compromise the life I’ve built and the people around me. Work-life balance is more than hours logged or time spent; it’s more about mindset, and I had to change my mindset. My life doesn’t stop or start with filmmaking. I can be more than that.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an artist I think the thing that sets me apart is the stories I want to tell. I want to tell afro-surrealist films. This concept is something I’ve given countless hours to study and perfect. This genre is why I’m a creative and I will say the path wasn’t easy. It’s already difficult being the cliché misunderstood artist, but adding in a concept that’s only recently gained attention and understanding. Good luck to me right? But I stayed true to what I loved and I’ve been blessed because of it. In the hardest time’s I’ve had the right people in my corner to help me get these large but simple eyes off the ground. This is taught me grace and patience. I’ve been able to help more people than myself in the process and although I’m still building my brand I know that with the people I’ve met and the thing’s I’ve learned I’m headed in the right direction.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend came for a week I’d love nothing more than to take them on a hike through the Santa Monica Mountains, go surfing in down by the Malibu beaches, and depending on the season a Dodger game is a must! I love nature and sports so spaces like these are where I like to be. The people are always so kind and knowledgeable, Their’s never a dull moment and that’s what I love about it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my sister Tatumn. I love and appreciate all the little things you do for me day in and day out. I wouldn’t have made it as far as I have with you. I hope you know all the love and support is reciprocated Twin!
