We had the good fortune of connecting with Alek Sandar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alek, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I decided to be an independent, musician, songwriter, singer, music producer) while I was studying international business management between Berlin, Paris, New York in 2007-2011. I did an internship that showed me help 9-to-5 office jobs look like and I decided that I cannot do this my entire life. So I dare the difficult step to freelance work as an artist back in 2011

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being an independent artist is extremely difficult. I’m proud that I am still thriving as an artist 13 years after i started as ‘Alek Sandar’.
I am grateful for making it into the radio in many countries, such as Germany, Bulgaria, Spain, France, Italy, Brazil. It’s almost impossible to achieve that without major label support.
I’m also grateful and proud to have collaborated with huge names in pop such as Snoop Dogg, Amanda Lepore, Klaas, Andrea, Young Thug, Desi Slava, Juicy J and many more.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in downtown LA, so when my friends come visit, I take them to my rooftop because I have the most breathtaking view.
Many people do not like downtown because of the homelessness, but there are also a lot of clean and shiny places: the Hoxton hotel (with its ever-sunny rooftop terrace pool bar), the most beautiful Apple Store in the world on Broadway, the Mykita boutique (my favorite brand of sunglasses is down the block). I would also show them some bars in West Hollywood, but my absolute highlight would be a trip to Joshua tree where we would indulge in the spirit of nature..

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to all composers and songwriters around the world who keep creating music in an environment that is increasingly difficult, and in a digital world where are too much is being decided by random algorithms.
I know how difficult it is to break through these barriers. And you have to prove yourself again and again and again.
Big shout out to everybody who is loyal to themselves in their music heart and keeps writing music despite all the difficulties and unfairness we face nowadays
