We had the good fortune of connecting with María Sardi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi María, what do you attribute your success to?
It’s easy to create art for others and please the algorithm by making 5-second videos with viral audio, but what’s truly important is believing in myself and my capabilities. Trusting my own process and knowing I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to is what makes my art successful—as a brand, as an artist, and as a creative human.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is simply a reflection of the way I see and experience life. Life is different for everyone, which is why there are so many forms of art. I’m drawn to canvas work, acrylics, cut-out magazines, and more because it’s what I grew up with—it’s what my mother taught me to use. Through her teachings, I gradually discovered my niche and fell in love with my creative process. Her confidence in my skills and abundant encouragement pushed me to move to New York City and pursue my creativity. Here, I’ve been able to surround myself with other incredibly talented artists, who continue to push me to work harder and smarter as I establish myself as a brand, an entity.

I’ve made many mistakes in my artistic career so far, but those mistakes have shaped the artist I am today. What I want the world to know about me and my art is that I come with a handful of stories, and these stories always tell themselves in bright, bold colors.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
New York City is full of adventure and fun around every corner. It’s almost impossible not to have a good time! In NYC, there’s a museum for everyone, so I’d definitely make sure to hit one of those first. I’d also take my best friend to all the big touristy spots, but special shoutout to Uptown Manhattan, where you can find amazing Latin food and beautiful scenery that you won’t find downtown. We can take a hike through Fort Tryon Park, visit The Met Cloisters, and then grab some arepas from Cachapas y Mas on Dyckman St.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My number one supporter has always been my mami! I owe all my creativity to her. Artistry runs in the family! Thanks to her, I’ve always had an artistic outlet. Whether it was making beaded bracelets for my entire 2nd grade class or keeping me busy with painting challenges so I wouldn’t bother her while she cooked, she always made sure I was surrounded by art. I deeply respect & resonate with her artistic opinion, and I’m so grateful to have someone so close to my heart who values me not just as an artist, but most importantly, as a daughter.
