Meet Holly Luc | Hair and Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Holly Luc and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Holly, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I never in a million years would think that I would pursue a creative career as a hair and makeup artist. But to think back to how it all started, my favorite hobby was coloring my hair every two weeks and I became known for the girl with colored hair back in high school.
My hair art was admired by many, but one important day my picky best friend volunteered me to showcase my art for her senior portraits. She gave me the creative freedom to style her hair and makeup—to which she was very pleased with. That was when I realized that what I had was not only a hobby, but a deep-rooted passion of mine because of how beautiful and confident I can make someone feel.
Many years and experiences later, I realized that coloring my hair was not only a hobby or passion of mine, but it was a way I connected with others. By chasing after my love for creating—whether styling hair or applying makeup others, I realized that I opened a space for others to also try new things which can be scary, but 9 times out of 10, I am building confidence in others inside and out.
So I decided to pursue an artistic and creative career because as cliche as it sounds, I am doing what I love and I love what I do. It doesn’t feel like work. It is rewarding that I get to create art with everyone I meet.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an artist, I create looks that are uniquely designed for each client. From the inspiration photos I am being shown to the personality that unravels before me, I take bits and pieces from the physical and mental notes to create a grand master piece.
Every person that I have the honor of working with is completely different—from personality to facial features, hair texture and skin tone, everyone is uniquely different. Therefore, not one single look is ever duplicated.
From bridal parties to fashion shows, photoshoots and birthday parties, I am given one shot with the utmost trust to beautify someone for their special day. The challenges I had to overcome was my fear of messing up. What I’ve learned to overcome this fear is by communicating clearly and honestly from beginning to ending. It is important to be honest in the type of work I provide and the look that I can achieve.
What I would want the world to know about my brand and my story is that I am where I am today because I strive for progress and not perfection. I am willing to make mistakes. Mistakes allow another opportunity to do better and to be better. Mistakes are life’s greatest teachers. But in order to know your capability, one must be willing to make mistakes, learn many ways of achieving the expected outcome, and lots of practice. Practice makes progress, not perfect. Do not strive for perfection, but for progress.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would take them to Long Beach!
First, I would take them to brunch at The Breakfast Bar on 4th street, order their waffles and drench it in their jam cause it’s so delicious! Also, they serve bottomless mimosas on weekends from 6am-1pm.
After brunch, I would take them to The Pike Outlets to have some ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery and shop around. Then we would grab dinner at Bubba Gump. After dinner, we can walk off the food coma at the waterfront trail while catching the sunset at the light house.
After the sunset, we can steer away on the swan boats at Rainbow Lagoon.
If we are feeling adventurous, we can head to 2nd street for drinks and cheers the night away!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my picky best friend, Caryn Douangmany, for always being my number one supporter and for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself. If it wasn’t for her, the success behind my career wouldn’t be possible.
