Hi Shanshan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The driving force behind my success has always been my boundless curiosity. I’m continually exploring and testing the latest technologies—whether it’s being an early beta user for groundbreaking tools like Apple Vision Pro, new AI advancements, or the latest design platforms, you name it. This passion for staying ahead ensures I’m always equipped with cutting-edge knowledge and insights that I can bring back to my work.

And it isn’t just for exploration—I channel this curiosity into elevating user experience. By integrating AR/VR, such as in my MindEase project, I’ve created immersive environments that enhance mindfulness and relaxation in ways traditional tools can’t achieve. I also weave AI into my core design processes, allowing me to ideate, iterate, and customize solutions more efficiently. This fusion of advanced technology with user-centered design enables me to craft experiences that are intuitive, impactful, and often transformative for users.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is grounded in creating user experiences that connect people to technology in meaningful, transformative ways. As the lead UX designer at Reekon, I’ve had the opportunity to shape several core products that set us apart from competitors in the construction tech industry. Our tools are unique in that they are designed for seamless interaction, allowing users to intuitively connect digital and physical workflows—something I’m proud to have influenced through my design work.

It hasn’t been an easy path, especially as I initially faced challenges in understanding the needs of professional construction users. Empathy and adaptability have been my guiding principles; I learned to bridge the gap between design theory and practical application by immersing myself in industry blogs, observing users on-site, and creating forums for ongoing feedback. These experiences taught me that successful design is grounded in listening and a deep understanding of user needs.

Ultimately, I want my work to highlight that design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating tools that fit users’ real needs, making complex tasks simpler, and helping people connect with technology in a way that feels natural and empowering.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots has to be Mount Rainier in Washington. It’s more than just a stunning mountain—it’s an experience. Summertime, the trails winding through lush forests and wildflower meadows are incredibly peaceful, and the views from higher elevations are just breathtaking. Winter time, the massive, snow-capped peak and star nights are beyond words.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe a great deal of my journey to my father and my partner. When I was just 12, my father trusted me to redesign his Chinese herb store—a responsibility that was both exciting and challenging at such a young age. He embraced my ideas wholeheartedly, investing time and resources into making my vision a reality. His unwavering support has extended to every decision I’ve made since, instilling a confidence in me that has been a cornerstone of my growth.

My partner, an exceptional software engineer, also plays a crucial role. Always at the forefront of technology, he inspires me to explore new tools and ideas and encourages me to take risks in trying anything new and exciting. He stands by me through setbacks and helps me overcome doubts, always there to support me and encourage me to move forward. Their support and belief in my potential have been invaluable to my development as a designer.
