We had the good fortune of connecting with Elaine Montalvo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elaine, how do you think about risk?
If not for taking the risk to try something new, I never would have explored costume design. While I was a student at the University of California at Berkeley, I enrolled in classes that I had never before heard of. It was there that a professor, Warren Travis, introduced me to the art and discipline of storytelling through character and costume. He encouraged me to continue my education in graduate school and pursue costume design as a career. Risk invites challenge while expanding the world of possibilities.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In my art of costume design for film and television, I help bring characters to life through the visual impact of what they wear. I contribute to the story by defining the look of each character in a convincing way. My approach to costume design always begins with the script in its entirety and the world that we are about to depict. I look for the individuality and humanity in every character and culture that I have the opportunity to design. I especially love taking part in projects that give a voice to underrepresented sectors of society.

I began my career by designing independent series and films. Each project pushed me forward in my profession. I learned how to collaborate with other departments such as cinematography, props, set design. When I started my career, I didn’t know anyone in the entertainment industry or in Los Angeles. Eventually, I was offered opportunities based on recommendations from people with whom I had worked. One’s community grows over time. I’d like it known that I bring a unique level of deep commitment to every project I’m entrusted with.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so much to do in Southern California! In the springtime I love to visit the open areas of Lancaster and witness the expanse of wild flowers in bloom. On that subject, Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge is always spectacular. I’d probably take my friend to the garment district in Downtown LA to explore the abundance of fabrics and textures in the fascinating shops. Then we’d probably dine at Louie Bottega’s and take some macarons to go. If we were able to get tickets on any given night, I’d love to visit the Magic Castle. It’s such a mysterious and exciting place. I’m also always in the mood to hang out at the Troubadour in West Hollywood for some live music and interesting people.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is dedicated to my parents, Lupe and Ricardo Montalvo. They encouraged me from the beginning and believed in all of my ambitions while teaching me to never lose sight of what’s most important in life – remaining true to one’s integrity. Their guidance is my constant beacon through the unknown.
