We had the good fortune of connecting with Nakya Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nakya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I desired a business that created generational wealth. A business that my daughter and family could call their own. I wanted to create something that would inspire and motivate not only myself but my loved ones also to be the best them. Give my family name a new identity in Christ. That with GOD all things are possible.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My background expertise are in cosmetology, graduating cosmetology school by 18. I then worked in the beauty industry of corporate for about 5 to 6 years. I began I mother in the mist of building my cosmetology career and quickly realized I needed a career that did not demand long hours, weekends and client based.

I prayed to god asking for an open door to go to college. I wasn’t sure what I’d go to school for or how but I knew a change had to be made in order to be the best mother for my daughter. I came across an opportunity with a nonprofit organization called yearup. Yearup was a trade school that helped young adults gain a certificate in Project management in only one year.

Conquering this certification was extremely hard especially since this all took place during COVID. I graduated the program but I sadly had a record that still needed expunged before I could land a job. It took about 6/7 months but I eventually was given a contract job at Bank of America. I am now in my third year at Bank of America.

With my steady income and schedule at BofA I was able to invest and start up my own business for Lockedin. Beginning I’m renting a chair in a salon, to then renting a large room that had rooms inside a building. Then creating and renting out my own salon. I think invested in merch for my business and began to make sales online.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well considering I just moved here 3 months ago I wouldn’t be the best tour guide. I would take them to the beaches if the weather permits. I love to walk the trails and just capture the beautiful nature so I’d ask if they would like to join. I attend church in simi valley atleast twice a week so I would love for my guest to experience a service. I love Thai food so we would more than likely get a bit of Thai. I absolutely love the Thai massages as well, I would treat them to a massage.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I gave to give my mother a great shout out for always believing in me. Even if we ever were at odds my mother Susan Lewis is always my biggest cheerleader. There is nothing she does not believe I cannot do or get through. I also have to give a great thanks to pastor Steven Furtick. I started to regularly attend his church in charlotte nc 2024 after hitting my wits end. At this time pastor Steven was released him book “do the new you”. This book and his sermons for the year was perfect timing for my life. Every single sermon that year spoke to my current situation week by week. Elevation truly elevated, purified and sanctified me to the point of no return. God then moved me across country to California now.
