We had the good fortune of connecting with Jared Schorr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jared, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I didn’t start off thinking of my starting my own business. I just really wanted to make art. But towards the end of art school, I had a kid and that really flipped a switch in me that I really had to make art work right out of the gate. So I contacted every art director I wanted to work with with a personal hand cut promo package full of postcards and work samples. I personalized them with their name cut out of the postcard slipcase. My thought was to try to give AD’s something they couldn’t throw away, something that would sit on their desk and remind them of me. I sent out 50-ish promos and I hard back from about half of them! It was an amazing response and let me know that I was on the right track.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the thing that sets me apart from other creatives is that I cut paper. I create illustrations from hundreds of tiny pieces of paper that I puzzle together. I’ve been cutting paper professionally for 15 years. I LOVE paper because there are so many different kinds of ways to use it as a medium. There are many other paper artists out there but we all have very different processes and style, and I love seeing that. Like any career over a long period of time, it has had it’s ups and downs but through adaptability and persistence i’ve been able to grow and learn in my career. All through those high’s and low’s i’ve been able to maintain a sense of success by doing good work without sacrificing my morals and ethics. It is nice to be able to stand upon a whole body of work and not nitpick little things here and there, but to see the scope and vision of my works with clarity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Ontario, CA, so we are going to start out there and walk a couple blocks to Logan’s Candy and watch them make ribbon candy. Then we drive to San Marino and go to The Huntington Library for a few hours. We then have an amazing lunch at Pie and Burger in Pasadena. Next we go to Walt’s in Eagle Rock and play some pinball and have a beer. After that we drive to Amoeba and try to find some records. Then we drive to Atwater Village where we visit Secret Headquarters to pick up some comics and zines. From there we walk over to Hugo’s Tacos and get their amazing nachos. We drive down the street to eat our amazing Mexican food picnicking in Griffith Park by the merry go round. We then drive up the street to the Observatory and watch the city light up from up high as the sun goes down. We then drive down to Santa Monica and sit on the beach and watch the lights of the ferris wheel dance upon the end of the pier while we talk into the night as we eat the ribbon candy from Logan’s. That sounds like a perfect busy day!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to Shoutout the amazing Loris Lora. I’ve known her for over ten years and she has always been an amazing support and advocate for me and my work. She is encouraging not only through her words but inspirational in her work ethic and constant search for making the best work that you can make. Her work is Awesome and every piece she creates is truly beautiful, just like her. We have a writing group together called Book Buds that is both a tool for both of us to becoming greater writers but to encourage each other in our everyday lives. She is as great an artist as she is a friend.
