We had the good fortune of connecting with Gamin Kang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gamin, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking is essential, and I believe it’s one of the most important keys to building a successful career. As a musician, I’ve often chosen risky paths that didn’t guarantee a secure future, but these choices have opened doors to new opportunities and allowed me to continuously explore uncharted territories as an artist.

I wouldn’t have become an international artist if I hadn’t taken the risk of pursuing an independent music career. I don’t see myself as an orchestra member with a stable, salaried position, confined by routine. Instead, I’ve embraced the uncertainty that comes with being a soloist and creative artist, pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities. Risk-taking has been pivotal in shaping my identity and career, and it continues to inspire my journey.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart as a musician is my deep-rooted connection to traditional Korean music, blended with a passion for cross-cultural collaborations. As a Korean musician trained in both classical and traditional styles, I bring a unique voice to the global stage, interpreting centuries-old traditions while creating something contemporary and fresh. I am most proud of my ability to bridge cultures through music, sharing the beauty of Korean heritage in ways that resonate with diverse audiences worldwide.

Getting to where I am today has been anything but easy. As an immigrant artist, I faced challenges such as cultural barriers, financial instability, and the uncertainty of pursuing an independent career. There were moments when I questioned my path, especially as traditional Korean music is a niche field outside of Korea. However, I embraced every challenge as an opportunity to grow. I sought collaborations with inspiring artists, learned from failures, and remained committed to my vision of blending tradition with innovation.

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is that perseverance and authenticity go hand in hand. Staying true to my artistic identity while remaining open to new ideas has allowed me to carve out a unique space in the music world. I’ve also learned that connection—whether with fellow artists or audiences—is at the heart of what I do.

What I want the world to know is that my work is not just about music; it’s about telling stories, fostering understanding, and celebrating the resilience of art. My journey is a testament to the power of taking risks, embracing one’s roots, and finding beauty in the intersection of tradition and modernity. Whether through performances, teaching, or collaborations, I strive to inspire others and create something meaningful that transcends borders.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d make sure they experienced the vibrant, diverse, and exciting energy of Los Angeles. Here’s how I’d plan the perfect itinerary:

Day 1: Beach Day in Venice
We’d start with a relaxing day at Venice Beach, enjoying walking along the Venice Canals to admire the quaint bridges and charming houses is a must. Then, we’d hit the iconic boardwalk to explore street performers, shops, and murals. Lunch would be tacos from a local taco truck—simple, fresh, and unbeatable.

Day 2: Beverly Hills & Griffith Park
We’d spend the morning exploring the historic Grey Mansion in Beverly Hills, my hidden gem for its serene beauty and quiet charm. Later, we’d head to Griffith Park, stopping at the Griffith Observatory for stunning city views and a bit of stargazing.

Day 3: Food Tour in Koreatown
Koreatown is a culinary paradise! We’d have Korean BBQ for lunch and explore authentic spots for spicy tteokbokki, bibimbap, and bingsu for dessert. The flavors here are unmatched, even compared to Korea itself.

Day 4: Malibu Escape
A trip up the coast to Malibu for a peaceful escape. Lunch at Malibu Farm on the pier for fresh, local dishes would be a highlight.

Day 5: Los Angeles has an endless array of experiences, I will want to add remarkable places, such as Downtown LA Art District and Hollywood before they leave!
