We had the good fortune of connecting with Randy Shillington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Randy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success has been my commitment to building genuine relationships – whether with clients, team members, or partners. By prioritizing trust, clear communication, and delivering value, I’ve been able to create long term results that not only grow my business but also positively impact the lives of those I work with.

What should our readers know about your business?
Malibu Nursery & Landscaping is a concierge service provider specializing in all maintenance a services needed outside the home. We began as a Residential landscape maintenance company and at the requests of our customers we have added talent to the crews and have strong capabilities through all aspects of the homes exterior.

Our level of service and experience is really what sets us apart. Our customers trust our capability, experience and the speed at which we operate.

I believe that the primary reason for our success is that we do what we say we are going to do. Some homeowners can be guarded at first but from my experience what they really want is someone they can trust and once they trust you they will go out of their way to tell everyone they know about how good you are.

My most important lesson was to ensure I only hire the best people. I can’t be everywhere and I have 35 of the most experienced, capable, and trusted people in the business. This was not easily accomplished and I learned some hard lessons along the way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First of all I would want them to stay at my home with my wife and I. It is clean, cozy and comfortable. My wife is also fantastic in the kitchen. So we would spoil our guest with some of her cooking.

We really enjoy traveling up to the Carpinteria/Santa Barbara area. Great little shops, a beach vibe, pubs and wine bars and terrific shopping. There is always something fun to do in the Santa Barbara county. I would take them to dinner at Lucky’s in Montecito. This is always a special treat!

Since we live in the Westlake Village area I would take them to Malibu for breakfast in Paradise Cove. Pancakes and coffee right on the beach is hard to beat especially for a visitor. A day at the beach in Malibu is always fun and then most likely swing by Malibu Brewery for a Smash burger and some locally brewed beer!

Many times visitors like to see some of the sights like Disneyland, Hollywood and Universal Studios. We have done these things before but it’s always fun to see the faces of people that are experiencing these things for the first time. I love doing that!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am very lucky to have had many mentors in my life and people that have encouraged me early on and still encourage me to this day. I was fortunate to grow up in a good middle class home with encouragement from both parents. Later in life I worked for my father in the medical device business. I was surrounded by some of the smartest people that took the time to teach me about business and relationships.

Support, love and encouragement are all around us if we are willing to take the time to seek these things. I think people genuinely love to be a part of helping others. I have found that some of my customers have been a big part of helping me to refine my strategy to ensure I am hitting my targets.

But the support and love from my family is by far the most meaningful. My wife has a unique ability to see things that I cannot. As a result I rely heavily on her. My kids also are an important part of my learning. I watch them closely and see that they are fearless in their pursuits. It reminds me that I am in control of my future and to be fearless in my path as I move forward.
