Meet Jennifer Chicoine | Small Business Owner / Mom / Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Chicoine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always had a passion for creativity and design! Life takes you in many different directions and after 14 working as a data analyst, there was something inside of my heart that was calling out to me to embrace my passion again. This led me to start my custom apparel business “Joy Crumbs.” I named it “Joy Crumbs” because I love that life is made up of millions of tiny moments of joy (and hopefully my work gets to be a little bit of joy your life)!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
While I love bringing my own visions come to life, I really love making clients visions come to life. I love working with people and listening to what they have in mind (maybe they don’t have a clear vision yet but they have a few ideas), then I can put my spin on it, send over my ideas, then work to bring it into reality.
Creating a tangible piece of artwork from an idea is so thrilling to me! I go into a time-warp when I am creating because I love it so much, it is like meditation for me.
The business side of things comes less naturally to me, so I am constantly learning new things. I love talking to other business owners and learning from them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Eating a burger with an amazing ocean view at the Shake Shack in Crystal Cove is a must!
A Disneyland trip is also a must. As an annual passholder, I’d be a pretty good tour guide (though, we’d spend most of our time in California Adventure because Disney with a glass of wine is *chef’s kiss*)
There is also a small, family-owned Italian restaurant (Filomena’s) in Costa Mesa that would be on the agenda. Everything is made from scratch and they built out an adorable Italian market next door. If there is another hankering for Italian food, we would make the trip to downtown LA and stand in line for a table at Maccheroni Republic (another absolute favorite)!
We would have to see an Angel game! My grandparents have had the same season tickets since 1970, so I am a born and raised Angel fan.
We would definitely have to work in a comedy show as well!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The three people that have helped me the most, and have been my biggest cheerleaders, are my husband and my parents. Their love and support has been monumental in my development.
Additionally, I inherited my artistic side from my dad. While my custom designs are named “Joy Crumbs,” I actually named my company “Jenn & Jerry Designs” because I wanted to include my dad (and he also helps me with designs and business ideas)!
