We had the good fortune of connecting with Sajen Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sajen, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Recently, in conversation with a friend in the music industry, we spoke about finding the healthy balance between work and life. Truthfully, there’s going to be priorities in life that you may not give as much time to in support of your artistic work. If your practice is something that you want to completely devote your life to, you’ll need to spend less time engrossed in other activities or obligations. I recently struggled with this reality when designing the newest collection of my clothing brand, Raynewear (raynewear.com). I juggled learning how to sew the samples of the shirts, designing the miniature environment displaying the clothes online, and developing a marketing strategy while finishing my graphic design finals at CalArts. It showed me where my priorities lie and the best way to structure my time towards the things that interest me most.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work in primarily graphic design and am inspired by the optimistic, larger than life scale of 1960’s design. My work is organic, colorful, and I aim for timelessness. I’ve had the pleasure of working for Drake’s production company, DreamCrew, and even with the high stakes of an environment like that, it showed me that there’s no reason to be intimidated or think that your position’s responsibilities are more complex than what you’re capable of.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite spots that I go to often is Topanga Canyon, specifically the Fossil Ridge Trailhead for a beautiful coastal view of Malibu and the surrounding area. I oversee the creative direction and videography for the DJ collective HAL0 STATION, and we just shot a set in front of a breathtaking, vast view of the downtown skyline called Angel’s Point in Elysian Park. For food, LA has an insane variety of multicultural eats, one of my favorites being Ohana BBQ in Studio City. For a nightly activity, Sound Nightclub usually has a good lineup of DJ’s playing and great ambience inside.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Firstly, my mom, Joan Green, was the first person to expose me to the artists I love and motivate me to invent and create things as a kid. I also want to shoutout my close friend, Matthew Mansfield, an artist who’s helped me think through my ideas and frame the way I present my work.
