We had the good fortune of connecting with Kensey Thierry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kensey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up, I always found my escape from reality through my creative expression. I initially began with charcoal and that transformed to acrylic painting and I finally moved to procreate (an iPad application enabling digital creation). Even though navigating a creative career is challenging to say the least, it’s important to release your cathartic expression. At the end of the day, sharing any art form helps others feel not so alone in this big world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most excited that I’ve expanded my art to also physical formats such as directing music videos and putting together creative concepts for album promotions and posters. It’s been beautiful expressing my various art forms digitally and I’m beyond thankful for the opportunities I’ve been given. My digital artwork has been easier to create but it’s difficult to promote and find your audience. I struggled the most with not conforming to what I felt other’s wanted to purchase rather than honoring the catharsis. It’s an easy trap to fall in and I’m thankful for my support system that has kept me authentic to my own style. Collaborating with other musicians has been a fun and uplifting experience, especially when they already align with my style of work. The In Thierry brand is designed to take vintage aesthetics and morph them with a pop art twist. Though I’ve been moving more into realism, it’s still a play on initially conservative ideas. Keep an eye out for my upcoming digital series titled “drowning.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would absolutely begin with taking them to Republique for the best French cuisine in the city. Their building is also Charlie Chaplins old studio so I appreciate the history as well. We’d have to dedicate an entire day to exploring the Huntington Library, it’s such a magical museum with the most beautiful and vast gardens and an incredible neoclassical collection. For night life, we’d be heading to Bar Sinister. It’s a goth bar/club that is judgement free and is a safe space for all variations of personal expression.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A huge influence in my life has been my mother, Nicki Thierry. She has consistently encouraged me to explore various creative outlets and I owe my career ambitions to her. I’d also like to thank my best friend Jordan Ellison. She is a phenomenal artist as well in the film industry and has kept me sane throughout all the madness life naturally brings to your door.
