We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Landrum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monique, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The success of Manning Coffee Company—is deeply rooted in my ancestry and culture. Coffee isn’t just a business for me; it’s a part of my story, my heritage, and my purpose. As a little girl, I remember going to visit my grandmother Josephine every summer in Manning, South Carolina and she would start every morning with a fresh pot of coffee. I would wake up and smell the aroma in the air and feel so connected to her, so safe and peaceful. We would tend to her land, acres and acres of gardens, animals, and fields of greenery. Starting the day with good coffee became a way of life, a symbol of productivity, and a means of connection.

Being of Geechee descent, I carry the legacy of a people who have always found strength in tradition and community. The Geechee culture is rich with stories of perseverance and an unbreakable bond to the land. That spirit is woven into Manning Coffee Company. Much of the knowledge I have of my lineage was passed down by the elders, oftentimes while sitting on the porch drinking coffee.

Success, to me, is about creating something of great quality and value that stands the test of time, and represents my culture just like my ancestors did.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Manning Coffee Company was born from my love for great coffee and my desire to source the highest quality beans. By profession, I’m a pharmaceutical digital marketer, but I wanted to create something of my own—something that brought people together over a truly delicious cup of coffee.

Getting here took hard work, persistence, and tapping into my network to find the right resources. Balancing entrepreneurship with a demanding career while prioritizing being a supportive wife and mother isn’t easy! So, I gave myself grace, building Manning Coffee at a pace that worked for my life.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the power of mentorship and accountability. Having people to help guide and challenge you is essential, especially when juggling multiple responsibilities. Manning Coffee is my passion project turned business, and I hope it inspires others to pursue their dreams—on their own terms.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d make sure they got a soulful LA experience—good food, great vibes, and plenty of R&B playing in the background. We’d hit up some of my favorite spots, starting with a smoothie at Simply Wholesome before taking on the Culver City Stairs for a workout with one of the most beautiful views of the skyline, Hollywood sign, and Griffith Observatory.

For food, I’d make sure we had tacos at Leo’s Taco Truck, a night out at Somerville on Slauson for amazing food and ambiance, and rooftop drinks at Lost & Found in DTLA—because nothing beats good music and a city skyline. Since I live in the South Bay, a beach day at Manhattan Beach would be a must, or even better, a bonfire night at Dockweiler Beach to close out the trip with good conversation and a cool ocean breeze.

LA has so much to offer, but for me, it’s all about the right mix—good eats, great energy, and experiences that feel like a perfect balance of fun and relaxation.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I first want to shout out to my loving parents for instilling a deep knowledge of self and family pride. I am thankful to be connected to my culture and history in such a meaningful way and that is because of them. They have always encouraged me to go after my dreams no matter how big or small. They truly believe in me and that belief has been the fuel behind my perseverance. Their investment into me and my business has made so much of this possible. My parents are both from Manning, South Carolina. Hence, Manning Coffee Company. One of my main goals in life is to make them proud.

I want to also thank my husband for loving me, believing in me, supporting me at every step and for being my best friend.
