Meet Jennifer Lauer | Writer and Podcaster

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Lauer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, how do you think about risk?
Risk is a new drug for me. I only wish that I was more willing to take risks as an artist earlier. Perfectionism and fear definitely kept me from putting my work into the world in a risky way.
Having the idea for something and then creating the work were well practiced, but for me, the risk was in the sharing it. Will anyone like it? Will they get it? Will they care? And the truth is, sometimes yes and sometimes no goes for all of those questions.
Now I understand that when you share something, you are letting it go. Whatever it meant to you in the creative process changes once you give it out to an audience. It’s a communication, I share this with you for better or worse.
And then you let it become the new thing that it is when it’s in someone else’s hands. A worthy risk.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a writer, I’ve dabbled in a most mediums – plays, poetry, tv/film and novels. I’d really love to write a song, that is my next Everest. But for now, I’m working on my second book in a cozy paranormal series called The Strange Chronicles. Based on the fiction podcast of the same name. I mostly write emotional sci-fi and paranormal mystery.
I just recorded the audiobook for Book One, called Start Somewhere, which should be available soon.
My debut novel, The Girl in the Zoo, was chosen to be a part of BookLife Elite’s library anthology. It was a thrill to see it hit #1 as an Amazon Bestseller in the US and Internationally, and also a Barnes & Noble and Apple Books Bestseller.
This dream was slow and steady to achieve, I think I had “finish my novel” on my New Years Resolution List for at least five years. My advice to others who want to finally do the thing, is to be consistent. I know it’s boring advice, but slow, small steps will get you there faster than you would believe.
I hope by sharing my story, others will be inspired to create their own work. Take the risk, take the consistent steps!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love LA so much.
In this itinerary, there is magically no traffic – actually teleportation is needed for this one. (I do write sci-fi)
For LA first-timer, casual day…
First, I’d take bestie to breakfast at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles.
Check out the pottery at the Hollywood Farmers Market.
Then we’d go take photos in the LACMA street lamps (“Urban Light” by Chris Burden), and visit the museum.
Grab sandwiches at Bay Cities and picnic at Santa Monica Beach and ride the roller coaster at the Pier.
Best chance for celeb sighting – a hike at Runyon or Fryman Canyon.
A stop at Vroman’s Bookstore.
Dinner at OyBar in Studio City.
Meet with friends at Griffith Observatory to see more stars.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m so supported by beautiful people around me, my family and friends, teachers and artists. I’m inspired by everyone that I meet, the art I devour, and in all of the tiny moments of life. I see life as this big collaboration, we’re all contributing our part, for better or worse. I try to be better.
