We had the good fortune of connecting with Xyanella Parris-wong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Xyanella, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my business because, as a child, I hated the hairstyles my mom gave me and always wished for more modern looks. Growing up, I also had the privilege of watching my nanny, Aunty Vanda, braid and do other people’s hair every day. I fell in love with seeing her creativity and the skill it took to transform someone’s look. To practice, I would do my doll’s hair, experimenting with different braids and styles. This hands-on experience fueled my passion, and even before becoming an adult, I started making money by offering my hairstyling services. It was a passion that grew from childhood frustrations, experiences, and practice into a business that I love today.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I got to where I am today because of the unwavering support from my cousins and my mom. My cousins were always there for me, ready to be models whenever I wanted to try out new hairstyles. Their willingness to help me practice and experiment with different styles gave me the confidence to grow my skills and perfect my craft. My mom, who passed away in 2020, was my biggest supporter. She always encouraged me to follow my passion, and her belief in me continues to inspire me every day. Losing her was one of the hardest challenges I’ve faced. For a while, I struggled to find motivation, and I wasn’t sure how to move forward with my business or my life. Her absence left a big void, and it was difficult to keep going.

However, in 2024, I found the strength to rebuild and rebrand my business. I transitioned from “Ervkastylez” to “The Braided Spot,” a fresh name that truly represents my passion for braiding and hairstyling. This rebrand wasn’t just a name change; it was a turning point in my personal and professional growth. I realized that the journey I’ve been on isn’t just about the styles I create, but about honoring my mom’s memory and the legacy of hard work and love she instilled in me.

The rebrand in 2024 marked a new chapter where I recommitted myself to my craft and the clients I serve. It was a reminder that even in the face of loss, there is always room to grow, evolve, and continue pursuing what we love. Today, I’m more motivated than ever, and I’m excited for the future of “The Braided Spot,” where I can continue to share my passion and make people feel beautiful, confident, and cared for.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d make sure they had an unforgettable time. We’d start the day with a delicious breakfast at Bliss, where we can enjoy amazing food and kick off the morning right. After that, we’d head to the beach to hang out, soak up the sun, and enjoy the ocean breeze for a bit. For lunch, I’d take them to Donna’s Kitchen, known for its great vibe and incredible food—definitely a spot that feels like home. After lunch, we’d take a scenic drive down the north or west coast, enjoying the views and stopping to take tons of photos along the way. Whether it’s the dramatic coastlines or hidden gems we discover, it’s all about capturing those moments and taking in the beauty of the area. Each day would be a mix of relaxation, adventure, and great food!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to a few special people in my life. First, to my dear friend Chanice, who recommended me and believed in me from the start your support has meant the world to me. To my mom, who passed away, thank you for all the love and guidance you gave me. I carry you with me every day. A huge shoutout to Aunty Vanda as well, for being the motivation and inspiration behind my love for hairstyling. And, of course, to my daughters your love, support, and belief in me keep me going every day. You all deserve so much credit in my story, and I’m forever grateful.
