Meet Weijing Wang | Designer/Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Weijing Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Weijing, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I like stories and telling stories in ways beyond words.

What should our readers know about your business?
My name is Weijing Wang. I am a landscape architect with educational and professional experiences across China, U.S. and Europe.
I have received training in Architecture, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture in Tianjin University, ENSAP Bordeaux, and University of Pennsylvania. I embarked my professional journey by working at Yufan Zhu Atelier at Tsinghua University, PLACE Studio in Portland, Oregon, and Snøhetta in Oslo, Norway. I have experiences ranging from mega scale garden to world renowned Opera house, and environment art installations.
There are two topics I would like to stress on what I learned in my professional live. First, from my personal point of view, today the design industries are facing tremendous challenge with how to build sustainable future for our living environment, and I have become consistently aware of growing human-nature conflicts. In daily work as a landscape designer, I learned how to strategically communicate problem-solving design approaches with clients, in both verbal and visual manners. For instance, cost-efficiency with material and production choices, and preserving existing flora and fauna. Being able to identify ecological friendly design methods and express them with effective reasonings are important skills for designers nowadays.
The second point is culture and storytelling, which has always been my interest and focus while working on projects. The way we alter our living environment also demonstrates our response and attitude to cultural elements and narratives of our lives. Being exposed to different urban and rural setting allows me to be more sensitive to people and the culture of living. Working for design firms that represents local culture of different countries has been a great source of inspiration for me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I had worked and lived in Oslo for two years, and Oslo sure is one of my favorite cities!
The city is marked by a compact, modern taste accompanied by abundance of nature, and I appreciate a lot the cozy and mindful lifestyle here.
The city is perfect for nature lovers. I enjoyed taking a walk in the Vigelandsparken, the Ekebergparken and the Palace Park afterwork in the weekends, they can all easily accessible and great places to be surrounded by peaceful scenes. For design enthusiasts, the Oslo Opera House, the Deichman Bjørvika Library won’t let you down. For outdoor sport lovers, Oslo has the most high-profile ski resorts and hiking cabin trips. Culture activities including the seaside saunas and music festivals are always waits for you to experience!
Oslo has many more than above to explore, it is a perfect balance of green, healthy and modern living,

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shout out for myself as a designer/artist.
