We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Salman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, what are you inspired by?
I have gained a lot of wisdom by listening to my elders. I have grown up by listening to people half my age. I suppose the thing that I am inspired by is knowledge. The experiential understanding from ‘that’ time in our minds – I am influenced by my exploration of the unknown and the discoveries therein. There is no real foresight to my design process but rather a flow of ideas from the zeitgeist and I, but a gestalt, express accordingly.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an artist. I am a builder, a creator, a fabricator and a fastener of fashions. My first client when I flipped my shop into the union was Zendaya. I was really thrilled to work with the television show Euphoria. Throughout my career I have worked with very notable and admirable professionals. Arbitrarily throwing a name out like Zendaya is a big deal because she is a big deal but everyone, no matter how Star studied or off Broadway they may be, everyone is valid and every person I have had the privilege of working with so far has helped mold me into the better person you see today.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some people are visual observers, and would like to go for a tour and just watch, people watch, walk around and absorb the atmosphere. Other people are audio learners, where they like to listen to somebody all right about history or location or facts. For me, the best time I could give my friends visiting Los Angeles would be to take them out on a dining experience. Check out some authentic food in Korea, town or Chinatown or little Tokyo. Diff off into another part of the city for some dessert or coffee. As simple as it sounds, going to a few places in town, really gives you a honest look at the cross-section of people in any city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank everybody who has left my life. If you were still here, I wouldn’t be. So many people come and go in our lives… Sometimes we think that people are the ones that elevate us, but sometimes the exact opposite can be true. There are a lot of people in life that although I love, I had to leave behind in order to propel, progress and move forward. I’d like to thank me. I’d like to thank me for being strong enough to walk away from difficult people, difficult situations and to persevere through the thick and thin. I wanna pat myself on the back. I’ve never had anybody from the 892 costume guild or the 705 wardrobe at union nepotist open the door and pull me in like some Nepo baby. It’s been me and I’m still fighting the good fight, I’m fighting it every day and I’m hoping to one day find myself with a team of like-minded people who have fought diligently and have calculated themselves, with the help of others, but with the perseverance of the dedication to their own craft and their belief in themselves. I believe in me.
