We had the good fortune of connecting with Bokiso Samayoa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi bokiso, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
In the creative world there is never a budget. Thats the creative part. If you had all the resources and the money in the world you wouldn’t need to make things as often or as passionately. I’de say early on risk it all! Money is energy. Resonate in abundance and your life will align. That means not only thinking about it but acting on it. Its harder than it sounds. Its an art of its own. Take calculated leaps of faith and you’ll be fine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is based around object design. I design and create functional and sculptural objects. Currently designing chairs.

My philosophy around art /design is not based on how far I can separate myself from the next person but how can I get closer. I believe the most important thing for an artist to do is introspect. Ask yourself the questions, travel through different perspectives, and communicate what you’ve learned. As far as professional practices learn from as many people as you can. Opportunity is the building blocks of your success. Every interaction is an opportunity. The lesson that changed my life was when I lost my home. I realized that I am truly fortunate, to have a home to lose. All these events in my life are opportunities. Opportunities to continue on, to push forward, to experience in the world in a new way. Perspective is the true measurement of value.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Near downtown you need to take a paint making class with Julia Godoy Studios to learn about our surrounding land and how you can connect with it in the most unique way. Go to grand central market for food, Go to Hauser and Wirth for art. Eat at Manuelas.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are two very special women in my life that have guided me through the toughest of times and that is my mother Araceli and my partner Julia. These two have been the pillars to my happiness and drive they have molded me into the unstoppable force I am today.
