We had the good fortune of connecting with The Siren and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi The Siren, how do you define success?
I define success by the impact I have on others and on myself. Not by materialistic acquirements or amount of money. Example, If I write a song and decide not to release it, but I send it to a few friends and they fall in love with it, and then I hear of their children listening to it and loving it, that is a success. It brought in no money though. Another example, if I make a track about some negative thing I am going through or feeling, and in the end there is this beautiful piece of audio art that was created from it, that is a success. I was able to transmute the negative into something positive. I feel better then. Knowing that this pain was not felt for nothing. Something was gained from it. And then others can listen to it and feel something. Huge success to me. Still no money was brought in from it. Does not matter. Of course some songs I produce have gone on to win awards and bring in monetary success but that was never as important.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would have to say being a musician is extremely rewarding to my soul at the cost of being awful in anything outside of the soul. I can create something from nothing so myself and others can enjoy it. I can heal myself by creating something good from the bad. Thats rewarding. But I don’t mind when bad things happen to me because I know I will be so hurt that an amazing piece of art will be created from it. Sad I lost a loved one? I’ll write about it. Mad I was swindled by a business partner? I’ll make something great from it. Upset a lover ripped my heart out? Time to create. I wonder sometimes if I have self sabotaged things because they were going too good, and I needed inspiration…

I treat my art like a painter. I don’t stick to one genre, same as a painter doesn’t stick to one color. I just take what i see, feel, or hear inside and go with it. Creating new genres and blurring the lines is natural to me. I grew up circuit bending which is taking electronics like kids toys or a nintendo powerglove and taking them apart, rearranging some wires, running it through speakers, and then you hit the buttons and weird sounds are created. Now it works really well for me as heavy electronic breakdowns at the end of tracks.

I produce my music all in 432hz Pythagorean tuning that ancient instruments were tuned to. The mathematics behind these numbers has a lot of synchronizations with the universe and the human body. Something about it feels different and feels right. 440hz is not based off perfect math and was something that was created recently in human history. It’s just off. I’ve given presentations up in Berkeley about 432hz and its correlation in science, the mind, the world around us.

I got where I am today by working on my craft every day of my life in some form. 10k hrs into a skill makes you a master. My dad told me, once you have practiced your songs so many times that you hate them, only then they are ready for the public. So I do it daily. Sometimes spending 18hrs on my piano composing, sometimes going out and doing karaoke to practice singing in other keys and styles, sometimes writing lyrics on my phone while traveling or waiting, but its always something daily.

The main thing I learned is to do what makes you happy. Whatever you are passionate about, just incorporate it into your life regularly. As long as you follow that, you are never lost. You will die inside extremely fast if you are not engaging in your passions. Even if you are not good. Even if it makes you no money. Do it. Its therapy for a deeper part of us, that fuels the three dimensional physical part of us

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First place is to have them gaze into the pacific ocean. For some that have never seen it before, it’s an overwhelming life changing moment on that deeper level. Its humbling. The next spot is into the forests. The Big Bear area is teeming with life and beauty. Pure wilderness in those mountains. I’ve lived there and have raised a red fox, a timberwolf, and 3 raccoon kits with their parents all in my homes. Bonding with the other nature around and breathing in that air. Everything covered in green life. My favorite. And then I like to show people the desert areas like Mojave, death valley, Joshua Tree, and the Salton Sea. I have such a feeling of mysticism and enchantment, good and bad out there. Ancient feelings. The night and day so different. Southern California is absolutely amazing. I could care less about the stores, restaurants, or the city in general. Its the nature around it that calls to me. If we have time I’ll take you up north to the redwoods, thats my all time fav spot on Earth and I have been all over the world.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank my parents for passing down this musical curse to me. I was brought into this world without my consent and had these music genes forced upon me, leaving me unable to focus on anything else in life except creating music. Filling my head nonstop with melodies and hearing potential songs in every sound around me. It’s pretty exhausting and I don’t have enough time to write down every song I hear. 2000+ songs I’ve composed and produced and this is a fraction of what I hear in my head. Thanks a lot.
