Meet Jin Xia | Illustrator & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jin Xia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jin, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Inspiration comes to me from many corners of life—news stories, travels, work, family, even casual conversations with friends. I’m especially drawn to the emotional depth in everyday moments. I believe that the most powerful art comes from what feels deeply personal and sincere. When I create an illustration, I often see my own life experiences reflected in the work. It’s like holding up a mirror to memory and emotion. At the same time, I think it’s essential to stay open—to different art forms, styles, and perspectives—especially in a world that’s constantly shifting and evolving. That openness helps me grow as both an artist and a person.
Living in New York City, I’m lucky to be surrounded by incredible art all the time. I visit museums and galleries regularly to recharge. I’ve always felt a deep connection to the Impressionist period—there’s something timeless about the way those artists captured fleeting beauty through color and texture. Their work continues to influence my own practice, especially in how I aim to evoke emotion and atmosphere through my illustrations.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart as an illustrator is my perspective—and the way I work with materials to express it. I believe every artist’s viewpoint is shaped by their personal journey, and that individuality is where the magic lies. For me, it’s important to stay true to how I see and feel the world, and to interpret subject matter in a way that’s uniquely my own.
One thing I’m especially proud of is my commitment to hands-on materials in a time when digital tools—especially AI-generated imagery—are becoming more dominant. I still create hand-painted textures for every illustration I make. It’s a slower, more intentional process, but I believe that tactile, analog quality brings soul and authenticity to the work. Each piece becomes something truly unique and irreplaceable—imbued with a sense of care, imperfection, and human touch that you just can’t replicate. That balance between tradition and innovation is something I’m really excited to keep exploring in my practice.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many places I adore in New York City, and I always get excited when friends come to visit—it’s the perfect excuse to re-experience the city through fresh eyes.
For a memorable start, I’d take them to Golden Unicorn in Chinatown for a luxurious dim sum brunch—rolling carts, delicate dumplings, the whole experience. Afterward, we’d walk it off with a stroll along the High Line or relax in Bryant Park with coffee if the weather is kind. It’s the kind of slow moment that makes you fall in love with the city all over again.
Dinner would be at ODRE, a hidden gem of a Korean restaurant with an incredible seasonal tasting menu that’s both creative and comforting. Since we’d already be downtown, we could catch an indie film at Angelika Film Center just around the corner—perfect way to wind down the evening.
If they’re staying for the week, I’d plan a short getaway upstate. Cold Spring is one of my favorite escapes from the city—charming, peaceful, and surrounded by nature. We’d hike, explore the local shops, and definitely make a stop at Dia Beacon. The scale and curation of the space always leave a lasting impression—it’s a must-see for any art lover.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to dedicate my journey and growth as an illustrator to my parents and my partner. Their unwavering support has meant everything to me, especially during moments of uncertainty or creative doubt. They’ve always stood by me, no matter where my artistic path led. I often think about something my mom used to tell me growing up: “Follow your passion.” That simple encouragement left a deep imprint on me. It gave me the permission to tune in closely to my emotions and to see the world through a more sensitive, expressive lens. I believe that kind of emotional awareness has been a quiet, yet powerful force in my creative process—and it’s part of what gives me the courage to keep going.
Their belief in me, even when things felt unclear, has been a constant source of strength. So this shoutout is for them—for their love, faith, and the quiet encouragement that continues to shape my story.
