We had the good fortune of connecting with Shann Christen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shann, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had solid work at a salon cutting and styling hair, with a clientele I built through 15 years in the movie industry and diligent work in the salon, when my own hair started falling out. This prompted me to study Trichology at a world-renowned Trichology school in Italy. I was then able to stop my own hair loss and re-grow my hair back. I felt that this was just as important – or even more important – of a service to provide to others who had hair loss from illness, aging, stress, and even trauma. For anyone who has experienced hair loss, it can be devastating and many don’t know there’s an organic and scientific way to stop hair loss and grow it back. That’s why I opened my business, to help those in need. Adding the discipline of Trichology to my arsenal of knowledge, my hairdressing was raised to a whole new level. Realizing and embracing the science of hair dressing improved my craft, with the chemical and physical properties that a hairdresser deals with everyday

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In America the craft of hairdressing is considered an art form and the education and license you receive to practice that craft is based on hairdressing being an art form a cosmotoligist. I saw beyond this that hairdressing is really hair care. Hair is a part of the living body and should be treated as such. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to receive an in-depth scientific based education (Trichology) to hair care. I found this education easy to absorb, even though I was in Torino, Italy. The Italian offered my education in English so language was not a challenge. I found I had a natural understanding of Trichology, the scientific study of hair and scalp. People need to know that we all have the potential to over come the challenges our hair faces to grow to its full beauty potential. Most hair loss issues are not “male patterned balding, but other easily managed conditions of the scalp and the hair growth. Learning to diagnose these conditions and offer a treatment to correct or rebalance hair and scalp problems has elevated me to a whole new level of hair care cosmetologist

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is the hardest question for me. I spend so much time working that even though I have been here for over 30 years I still don’t have the ‘favorite places’… I would organize my friends trip in a week that Phish was playing at the Hollywood Bowl. A must see venue… I would enjoy an evening at the Farmer’s Market at the Grove at 3rd and Fairfax. This is such a cool place to eat and hang out, live music and a great LA crowd… Of coarse a trip to LA should include the beach, which I would head to Paradise Cove… I personally would drag my friend to the Spa.. LA has some amazing Korean spas for body care and massage.’

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would shout out to Mario Zunino, in Torino, Italy especially Raffaele Radice. A chemical engineer, with Mario Zunino, Inc… He not only shaped me as a Trichologist but with his chemical background gave me a foundation to my education rooted deeply in the chemical processes of growing hair. Having this biology/chemical based education with a scientific look at hairdressing, growing hair and hair loss issues molded me into the “Hair Dr.” that I am today. Several Italian hairdressers that I met during the years of my Trichology education help me design the fashion in which I would shape and craft the services that I offer my clients. How I do color, how I shape and design treatment series for hair loss clients, and how I cut and style hair have all been influenced by the discipline of Trichology and every hairdressers I have met through out my career.
