We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbra Dillon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Barbra, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
At Fanbase Press, we believe that stories matter. Acknowledging the importance of stories and the impact of storytelling is at the core of the organization. Universal communication through stories allows us to examine the essentials of human existence, to understand ourselves better and to grow and/or heal, to pass on important values, knowledge, and lessons to the next generation, and to connect with one another through empathy and compassion. Fanbase Press holds a commitment to looking beyond the simple entertainment factor of pop culture storytelling in order to find the value that each story offers to us as individuals, our world, and/or the human condition.

As both a publisher and media outlet, we instill this ethos in all of our activities. We endeavor to provide an outlet for as many stories and voices as we can with the hope that they will connect with the audiences that need them most.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
From the very beginning, Fanbase Press has always existed as a unique company, given that we serve as both a comics publisher and a media outlet; however, we have never viewed the comics community nor our fellow publishers/creators as competition. There are so many incredible stories that deserve to be given a voice and a platform to reach new audiences across all mediums, and we aim to support those stories across the board.

While we may not be a large company, my partner Bryant and I have always endeavored to balance our available resources with the projects that we take on. We never want our work to suffer from being overextended, so we do our utmost to grow when we have the capabilities to do so. We do our best to research before moving in new directions, we debrief from our trials and attempt to learn from our mistakes, and, above all, we remind ourselves frequently that we do this work because we love it – because we feel that there is value in it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the 20 years that we have lived in Los Angeles (all within the San Fernando Valley), we have come to adore the quieter spots, where you can truly feel at home. For any visitor to the city, that has always meant a trip to Ernie’s Mexican Restaurant in North Hollywood, where we have been dining for well over a decade (sometimes more than once per week). The staff is truly incredible, and the food is a delight!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In celebrating Fanbase Press’ 15th anniversary this year, we offer our immense thanks to all of the creators, staff, and contributors who have collaborated with us, the industry colleagues who have shared their time and expertise for countless interviews and podcasts, as well as the readers and listeners who have supported our work in all its forms.

Above all, we are incredibly grateful to be a part of the comics community, and we value the opportunity to highlight the amazingly talented folks around us.
