We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Omonye Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Omonye, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Omosilk was born out of a personal need—one that started in my own home. As a mother of three children with sensitive skin and eczema, I saw firsthand how these conditions led to hair loss and constant discomfort. As a pharmacist, I knew the long-term effects medications could have on early childhood development, so I began searching for a more sustainable, lifestyle-based solution—something natural, effective, and safe.

That search led me to mulberry silk—a completely natural, hypoallergenic fiber infused with proteins and micronutrients that are incredibly beneficial for hair and skin. It was the perfect material to help protect my children’s delicate hair and soothe their sensitive skin. But when I looked for mulberry silk accessories designed for children, I found nothing. There were no high-quality, kid-friendly options available.

At that moment, I knew I had to take matters into my own hands. I started making silk accessories for my kids, and the results were undeniable—healthier hair, softer skin, and fewer irritations. That’s when my mission became clear. If my family needed this, how many other families were struggling without a solution?

That realization led to Omosilk—a brand created not just to fill a gap in the market but to set a new standard for self-care. I wasn’t just starting a business; I was introducing a new way for people—especially those with sensitive skin and hair concerns—to experience beauty, wellness, and confidence through science-backed, high-quality silk products.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My Career Journey & What Sets Me Apart
My career has been a journey of passion, purpose, and resilience. Before founding Omosilk, I built a strong foundation in pharmacy and business leadership. As a pharmacist, I gained deep expertise in health and wellness, understanding how different treatments and lifestyle choices impact our bodies. Later, as a VP of Operations for a Fortune 500 company, I led high-performing teams and managed a $2 billion P&L, sharpening my skills in leadership, strategy, and operational excellence.

Leveraging my success in the corporate world, I saw an opportunity to build something of my own—rooted in a personal need and a mission to create meaningful impact. As a mother of three children with eczema and sensitive skin, I saw firsthand how these conditions led to hair loss, irritation, and discomfort. I knew the long-term effects of medications on childhood development, so I started searching for non-medical, lifestyle-based solutions. That’s when I discovered mulberry silk—a natural, hypoallergenic fiber rich in proteins and micronutrients that protect hair and soothe the skin.

When I searched for high-quality silk accessories for children, I found nothing. That’s when I took matters into my own hands. I started making silk pieces for my kids, and the transformation was undeniable—healthier hair, calmer skin, and fewer irritations. It was then that I realized: if my family needed this, so did thousands of others. That’s how Omosilk was born—not just as a business but as a brand dedicated to improving hair and skin health naturally.

The Challenges & How I Overcame Them
Starting my own business was far from easy. Shifting from a corporate executive to an entrepreneur meant stepping into the unknown, learning everything from product development to branding and navigating the challenges of scaling a business from scratch. There were financial risks, moments of doubt, and the constant balancing act of being a businesswoman, a wife and a mother.

But I didn’t let the challenges stop me. I leaned into my problem-solving mindset as a pharmacist, my strategic thinking from my corporate career, and my unwavering determination as a mother. I sought mentorship, surrounded myself with people who challenged and supported me, and stayed committed to my mission to provide high-quality, science-backed silk products that truly make a difference.

What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m most proud of the real impact Omosilk is making. Every day, I hear from customers who have struggled for years with sensitive skin, hair loss, or discomfort—only to find relief and confidence through our products. That’s what fuels me. This isn’t just about selling silk—it’s about empowering people with solutions that work, naturally and effectively.

Lessons Learned & What I Want the World to Know
Innovation starts with solving a real problem. If you can’t find what you need, create it.
Resilience is everything. There will be challenges, but those who keep pushing forward are the ones who succeed.
Your background is your superpower. I combined my expertise in pharmacy, business, and personal experience as a mother to build a brand that is both impactful and science-driven.
At the core of it all, Omosilk is more than just a brand—it’s a revolution in hair and skin care for those with sensitive needs. I want the world to know that self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, the best solutions come from nature, backed by science, and created with love. And that’s exactly what Omosilk represents. We’re just getting started.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d make sure they experienced the best of LA—a perfect mix of food, culture, relaxation, and adventure.

We’d start with brunch at the Waldorf Astoria rooftop, soaking in stunning city views before exploring the Broad Museum and RELE Art Gallery, both offering incredible contemporary and African art. For food, we’d hit Farmhouse Thai in West Adams, enjoy Jamaican jerk at Hungry Joe’s in Inglewood, and grab ice cream at All Chill in Leimert Park.

For relaxation, we’d book a massage at The Massage Place (the one on Overland Ave specifically) and spend a day unwinding at Dockweiler or Santa Monica beach. We’d take on Kenneth Hahn Park’s trails and push through the Culver City Stairs for the best city views. Reparations Club Bookstore would be the go-to for a quiet afternoon read, and for nightlife, we’d catch a comedy show in West Hollywood for some much-needed laughter.

To wrap up the trip, we’d go for a classic In-N-Out Burger brunch—because no LA experience is complete without it! One last scenic drive along PCH, and they’d leave with unforgettable memories of the best LA has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Success is never a solo journey, and I’m incredibly grateful for the people who have been part of mine. If I had to dedicate a special shoutout, it would be to my husband—my greatest supporter and my rock. From the very beginning of Omosilk, he has been my sounding board, my strategist, and my biggest cheerleader. Entrepreneurship comes with its highs and lows, and on the days when doubt creeps in, he’s always there with words of encouragement and the perfect pep talk to keep me going.

Beyond emotional support, his advice on navigating the complexities of business has been invaluable. He helps me see challenges from different angles, pushes me to think bigger, and reminds me why I started this journey in the first place. Having someone in your corner who believes in you, even on the days you struggle to believe in yourself, is priceless.

So, this shoutout is for him—for being my partner in every sense of the word and for always rooting for me. Omosilk may have started as my vision, but his support has been instrumental in bringing it to life.
