We had the good fortune of connecting with Mackenzie Jaquish and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mackenzie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I love to tell stories. From a young age, I understood that I could communicate through storytelling. Storytelling is one of the main ways we connect as humans. We’re all exploring this world for the first time, and finding someone with a similar story to you, someone you can relate to, is so important. Comedy came into the picture when I realized people enjoyed hearing stories that made them laugh at the end. A story with a punchline, not just a plot. When you’re laughing, you’re not thinking about your problems, you’re truly in the moment. So, I chose to become a writer because I wanted to be able to share my stories on every platform imaginable. I have had the amazing opportunity to tell my stories and connect with an audience on stage, in articles, and films. My goal is to make whoever is watching feel less alone when hearing the story and hopefully connect in a way they didn’t expect.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started writing at a young age, and it was truly the only way I could express myself. In my journal, which I kept under my bed, is where I was able to fully be myself. Through my writing, I have been able to connect with people in a way I never imagined. I love getting on stage as a stand-up and having people come up to me after and be excited to tell me they went through a similar situation. I also love it when someone has seen a film I’ve wrote and connects with it in a way I didn’t predict. I want people to take the stories that I write and turn them into their own stories.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in New York City, so the options are endless! However, a perfect Saturday night for me starts at Dutch Fred’s, with a martini, Hendricks with a twist. From there, we would walk through the city, walking down 5th Avenue and getting to pick out all the amazing architecture in that area, the Empire State Building, and the New York City Public Library. We would head in the direction of the Stand, a comedy club in the village where you can see some amazing comics performing nightly. The night would end with a burger from 7th Street Burger and another martini, Hendricks, extra dirty.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The women in my life inspire me every single day. They have been the main reason I have continued to succeed in this career. Their tenacious spirit, constant support, and endless love have helped push me in ways that I never imagined.

Last fall, I wrapped a really big project. It was a ton of work, and it truly pushed me to grow as a writer, producer, and as a team leader. Someone afterwards congratulated my boyfriend for all the work he did supporting me during the project. Now, of course, my boyfriend was supportive during that time, but if I’m being honest, my mother was the one who had to listen to all the drama!

My mother has been my main support system and my go-to person no matter the situation. She’s reliable, hard working, trustworthy, smart, and has a unique perspective when it comes to every situation. She’s the true secret to my success. I call her when I’m struggling with emotional issues and when I can’t find a solution to a problem. It doesn’t matter what I’m calling her for; by the end of the call, all my issues will be resolved, and I’ll feel better. She’s the reason I’m a writer, and her love and support are what keep me going.
