We had the good fortune of connecting with Lily Kershaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lily, why did you pursue a creative career?
Writing songs and creating music is how I make sense of things. It helps me organize my interior life and move more easily through the world. It’s how I’ve spent my days since I was little—writing songs, thinking about lyrics, organizing my life experience into stanzas, more or less. When I was young, I knew I had to turn it into my career so that the way I had learned to emotionally take care of myself could also be the way I financially took care of myself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music is deeply personal and has only grown more so over time. I’ve been writing since I was six, started recording in a friend’s garage as a teen, and moved into a studio by 19. I’ve recorded since then and released music since I was 20. What I’m most proud of is that I never stopped—despite depression, illness, injury, doubt, and the pressures of an industry trying to define my worth by age, gender, or appearance. Writing has been my saving grace, guiding me through every storm.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Funny you ask—one of my close friends is visiting this weekend, and I’ve already suggested all my favorite spots! I’m obsessed with infrared saunas and I love Pause Studio in Studio City. After that, we’ll hit Casa Vega for their incredible shrimp tacos. Erewhon (Silverlake is my favorite) is a must—every out-of-town friend insists on going. Brunch will be at Little Dom’s for their ricotta blueberry pancakes—I’ve been hooked for over a decade. Then we’ll stop by Le Pink, my favorite beauty apothecary. We’re definitely catching a movie too—The Vista, The Los Feliz 3 , or AMC at CityWalk, which always makes me feel festive. If we see a movie at The Los Feliz 3 well of course pop into Skylight Books after!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My booking agent and friend, Dan Boyle (WME)! He’s gotten me back out on the road, playing shows and touring consistently since this past fall. With his encouragement and belief in me, he’s single-handedly helped me do things on stage I’ve never done before and has helped me fall in love with playing live in a whole new way. He always encourages me to take the next step. I am so grateful for him.
