We had the good fortune of connecting with Ian Thorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ian, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think my career has thrived off risk.
Becoming a barber at 32 was a risk.
Moving to LA at 35 was a risk.
Every time I’ve taken a leap I’ve learned to fly. You can’t grow if you don’t take risks. It’s worked out for me so far so I’m going to continue doing so

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My ability to be personable is what sets me apart. Most barbers view the craft as an art, but I really look at it as customer service and my clients can feel that. They appreciate it, and that’s what makes me successful.

It wasn’t necessarily an easy road to get where I’m at, there was a lot of hard work involved, but it was organic and ever move I’ve made felt right. So, in a sense it was easy because I never had to fight what I wanted.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There so much to do out here this question is impossible to answer.
My favorite party I’ve been to was Familiar Faces. That party is awesome and it’s outdoors for the summer so the vibes are great.
Highland park is my favorite neighborhood during the day to explore. Tons of gems there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Everyone that’s been a part of my barber journey, starting with my barber school, JT’s Cuts Academy.
Sidelines Barbershop and the owner there G were also huge mentors and instrumental in shaping who I am in my career.
The shop I’m currently at, Aanuko, also deserves tremendous credit. They’ve helped me grow in a new city at an extremely rapid rate. Im grateful for everything they have done, and continue to do.
