We had the good fortune of connecting with Christsean Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christsean, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from a small city in California called San Bernardino, but I grew up in Menifee. My background and upbringing consist of a lot of consumption of horror films and playing sports like football. Movies like The Grudge, 28 Days Later, and/or The Mist really introduced me to the darker aesthetic that I have embraced and loved throughout my entire life up to this point. I also mention my upbringing in relation to sports because sports provides so much of the discipline that I apply in my life now when it comes to customer service, design, and the approach of how passionate and tenacious I am about my label.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is heavily technical and maximalist in its construction. Others are focused on singular aspects of the design like silhouette or graphics but I’ve taken the time out of my 7 year tenure to really hone in on the ability to create maximalist garments through all mediums within fashion. It provides a versatility that not many other designers have.

I’d say it certainly wasn’t easy to get to where I am at, I spent a solid two years just really finding my footing in the space and I had no resources, I built what I have with no backing nor any connections. I just had a dream and passion and it pushed me to become who I am. It taught me that the way social media frames the business is entirely wrong, you don’t need celebrities or even money to get started, you need passion.

If the world should know anything about me, it’s truly that I want to be the best designer to someone out there. I don’t need everyone to love what I’m doing but inspiring others to care about the intricacies of design and art is the best thing you can do as a designer. Everything else is secondary in comparison to the joy that comes from giving people the insight they need to get through whatever they are going through or however they want to create.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It depends on the city, where I come from, there’s literally nothing to do. That’s not an exaggeration I don’t come from huge cities. If I were to choose a city though it would be San Diego, CA. It’s vastly underrated with some of the best night life on the planet and extremely good tacos too. I’d also suggest checking out Gaslamp Quarter. Im a lover of old town cities and San Diego has an insanely beautiful one.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my mother, I would choose many others but she’s the rock behind why I’m literally alive and I’ve spent a majority of my life around her and even at one point sleeping in the car with my ma, it’s no one else who’s experienced or understands my life and who I am as much as her.
