We had the good fortune of connecting with Frida Touray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Frida, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It was less thought and more intuition. I had come from a career of being part of a band (native dancer) which was active for a couple of years. I felt this deep need to be fully in charge of my own brand and creative output and I wanted to express myself more openly and honestly in my lyrics and music.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think the thing that has guided me and helped me most throughout my career is a sense of being grounded. The feeling and essence of creating is the same for me as it was when I was very young. It helps me sift through what isn’t important, where to put my focus and energy.
I think what I am most proud of in my own work is that I’m not afraid of vulnerability. I don’t think I’m the most confident and powerful lyricist but my intention and truthfulness is there. And I continue to check myself through any creative process. If I mean what I’m writing. I’m honest with myself. I’m proud of that.
I think my biggest challenge I’ve faced is my reluctance to perform live. I think maybe I put too much much pressure on things being perfect and that can sometimes make me shy away from taking on gigs. It’s something I’m working through.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My friend Stran Cetin (another incredible artist) just came to visit me here in London. She used to live here 15 years ago and sadly didn’t have the best time. It was her first time back since leaving and I wanted her to leave feeling like she reclaimed it somehow. I took her to broadway market on a Sunday. We had brunch and strolled through the flower market. Went to a pub for a drink in the sun. We went to Lido festival in Victoria park in the evening and saw some music.
We even walked through our old neighbourhood in North London. Was like CBT therapy in a way. We had a really beautiful weekend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out my friend Laura Roy who is an amazing artist/songwriter/producer. She’s so special. We encourage and support each other fully and the way she writes, carries herself and navigates her own career is incredibly inspiring to me.

Another person I wanna shout out is Chris Hyson. A friend and beautiful writer/producer that have written and produced my own solo project with and for me. He has his own solo project under his name as well as his band ‘Snowpoet’ with singer Lauren Kinsella. He is an incredible musician and producer. I feel like everything that he touched turns to gold.
