We had the good fortune of connecting with Sham Blak and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sham, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make was to put myself first. As a service member, it’s a part of your creed to always place the mission first, to be selfless. But putting your self first is the ultimate act of being selfless. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is very unorthodox to say the least. A very close mentor of mine once compared my work to Picasso, saying it won’t really be appreciated until after I pass. Which I took as a very big compliment, because hindsight is 20/20. In comparison of course, I’m not big on comparing myself to others.

I can’t really say what sets me apart from others because I don’t spend much time criticizing other people. The amount of energy you invest isn’t always returned, especially if they aren’t going in the direction I see myself traveling. Hard work and dedication has been my foundation.

I’m proud of how far I’ve come as an independent artist. I’ve kept a steady pace, stayed consistent and worked very hard. These are the same things that have helped me get to where I’m at today. It wasn’t easy showing up, but learning how to be comfortable while I’m uncomfortable has really helped me grow.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned on the way is never mix emotions with business, it’s a real life game of uno and that can get spooky! Take what you can and what you can’t make a mental note for next time.

My message to the world is keep showing up, as Nipsey Hussle once said , “It sounds simple telling people to work hard and never quit, but to really execute and demonstrate those principles takes discipline and faith” and that’s what I want to world to know as well. Whatever it is that you want, you are going to have to earn it everyday!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s a good question, it’s so much to do I don’t know where I would even start. I’m such a tailored experience. I’m always trying to accommodate to people without a cookie cutter formula

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to thank everyone who forced me to love myself more. To the individuals who I thought I could lean on, that forced me to be stronger than I thought I was. To the strangers that showed up in place of my loved ones, the strangers that bought the merchandise every release, that shared my projects, that bought tickets to my shows. And last but definitely not least my wife and kids. Who get the real me, when I’m sad, frustrated, anxious and happy. Thank you for loving me without conditions.
