Meet Philip Oloo | Architectural Designer, Virtual Reality for Architecture and Licensed General Contractor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Philip Oloo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Philip, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The decision to start my own business emerged from a combination of frustration with employment, dissatisfaction with my work, and the numerous challenges I faced in my career. I often felt invisible, yearning for recognition of my contributions. Growing up, I was profoundly influenced by my father, who ventured into entrepreneurship himself. I vividly recall the triumphs and struggles he experienced, as well as the remarkable sense of freedom that came with being his own boss.
My wife played a pivotal role in this journey as well, providing the encouragement I needed to take that crucial first step. Sometimes, all it takes is a little nudge from a loved one to ignite the spark of ambition. With this background and support, the idea of starting my own business felt like a natural progression.
Additionally, I sensed that I had reached a plateau in my career, where the monotony stifled my desire for personal growth and new challenges. In summary, the intertwined motivations of familial inspiration, personal aspirations, and the quest for fulfillment fueled my decision to embark on this entrepreneurial path.

What should our readers know about your business?
1. What sets you apart from others, and what are you most proud of or excited about?
At SPACIALISTS, our design firm is at the forefront of innovation, specializing in the incredible world of virtual reality for architecture. We are not just creating stunning visual experiences; we also expertly generate comprehensive construction documents and efficiently submit plans to Building and Safety departments. What excites me the most is witnessing how architects are increasingly turning to us as a vital design tool. We enable real-time reviews of buildings, allowing for immediate adjustments while designing spaces. This unique niche has fostered valuable collaborations with numerous architectural firms across the United States, enhancing our impact on the industry.
2. How did you get to where you are today business-wise?
My journey to success has been fueled by relentless practice and dedication to constant learning, drawing inspiration from biographies, economics, and business literature. An essential part of my self-education was mastering Unreal Engine, a powerful tool from the gaming industry. Interestingly, I accepted a job before I had completely mastered the program, which propelled me into a world of deep exploration and experimentation. This challenge pushed me to connect with talented game designers from Japan, Germany, South Korea, and the USA, expanding my horizons and enriching my skill set.
3. Was it easy?
Nothing truly worthwhile comes easy, especially when you feel rushed. Much like the principles of economics, achieving mastery resembles the concept of compound interest, which requires daily dedication over several years. Each small effort compounds into significant growth over time, leading to mastery in one’s craft.
4. What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
One of the most profound lessons I’ve encountered is that struggle often stems from a lack of solutions. This absence can lead to pain and stress. To combat this, I believe in the importance of continuous learning—embracing new knowledge every day. By consistently experimenting and asking questions, you can cultivate a mindset that seeks solutions and fosters innovation.
5. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My story is deeply rooted in self-awareness, and the philosophy that drives SPACIALISTS revolves around the idea of constant improvement. As early adopters, we wholeheartedly embrace AI in architecture, doing so with an open mindset and zero resistance. Our mission is to simplify our clients’ lives, ensuring that, during the design phase, we not only make the right decisions but also prioritize sustainable and innovative solutions that maximize designs, greatly benefit both their projects and the environment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A scenic drive along the iconic Highway 1 from Santa Barbara to San Francisco promises to unveil some of the most breathtaking vistas that California has to offer. The journey meanders through rugged cliffs that view the Pacific Ocean, offering panoramic views of crashing waves and golden sunsets. A stop at Redwood National Park would be nothing short of magical, where towering ancient trees create a serene canopy that feels like stepping into a fairy tale.
Las Vegas beckons with its vibrant lights and world-class entertainment, making it an exhilarating destination for those seeking unforgettable shows and a bustling nightlife. And of course, no trip would be complete without indulging in authentic Mexican cuisine from a charming mom-and-pop stores with 5 star reviews lolquestion where the rich flavors and warm atmosphere create a true local experience. If fate allows, it would be amazing to catch a performance by the Wu-Tang Clan, bringing an electrifying energy to the adventure.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe a profound debt of gratitude to my beloved family—my wonderful wife, Jen, and our amazing children, Zuri, Amani, and Jaidyn. As I navigate this incredible journey called life, I am continually reminded of how pivotal they are to my personal growth and happiness. Their unwavering support and love inspire me every day.
I would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to my parents, Portash and Heddah, who envisioned a bright future for me in the United States long before I ever dared to dream of such possibilities. Their faith in my potential has been a guiding light throughout my journey.
Additionally, my brother deserves special recognition for his constant encouragement, particularly in my quest for self-improvement. His insights into the Kaizen mindset, which emphasizes continuous, incremental growth, have helped shape my perspective on life.
Finally, I am deeply grateful for the enlightening lectures from The Great Courses, which have profoundly redefined my understanding of human nature and the triumphs we are capable of achieving. This wealth of knowledge has opened my eyes to the complexities of the world and inspired me to strive ever higher.
