We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystyn Lambert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Krystyn, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
The habits that most help me succeed most are journaling and having a secondary artistic endeavor. Writing daily since 2018, even if only a few sentences, allows me to parse out my thoughts, emotions, and interests. This provides me with a stronger sense of self that spills over into how I carry myself onstage. Further, cultivating a hobby that I don’t monetize or use in my primary work of mentalism gives me a space to work out creative problems. I find that if I need a solution to make a trick work or if I run into an issue with scripting, sitting down to collage for all but thirty minutes can often offer me an answer.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a mentalist and intuitive reader whose work encourages new understanding about what is possible through intuition. I grew up at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, joining in 2003 at age 12 as their youngest member. That opened a whole new world for me, from gaining important mentors to the ability to win teen magic competitions. Most notably I starred in the award-winning documentary, Make Believe, which caught the eye of Criss Angel. I joined his Spike TV show as a trick developer, and then I was the featured magician in his live Las Vegas show and national tour for the next four years. After an injury that forced me to bow out of the show, I took some time to reevaluate my life. When I returned to magic, I decided to pursue my lifelong dream of performing mentalism.

When asked about what my “style” is, I just have to say honesty. I’m reading people for the entirety of my show, whether it’s for a trick or just so I can understand my audience members. On a neurobiological level, authenticity creates safety for others because their brains do not need to expend energy trying to “work you out,” so to say. People can sense our earnestness, compassion, and, of course, empathy. This is precisely why I have overheard it said at the Magic Castle, “Well, I could tell that guy was fake . . . but Krystyn was real!” While they likely did not mean “real” as in actually supernatural, they were picking up on there being more substantial and emotional elements in the performance. Similarly, I have been asked how I “get” people to cry in my performances. It’s not about “getting” anything, but to answer the question it’s that people cry because they feel safe. And because they feel that safety, what I’m putting forth transmutes into more than merely a “show” to them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up on the westside, but now I live in Koreatown. I never want to leave! If my magic besties, Rebecca Spectre in Chicago and Chloe Olewitz in NY, were visiting, I’d start us for breakfast at Philippe’s in downtown LA. Breakfast there ends well before noon, so luckily they’re on other time zones. When it’s time for lunch, we’d trek back to Jaragua on Beverly for my favorite pupusas in town. I’d then drag us to Cafe Loft on 6th in Koreatown for a long journaling session. This is all a weekly endeavor for me. Dinner would have to be at BCD Tofu House on Western Avenue and then drinks late into the night at HMS Bounty.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to shoutout The Three of Cups Collective and Sinistra Press, which are organizations that support women in magic who have mystical and feminist leanings. Their keen eyes have helped shape my most current work by championing thoughtful and analytic performances.
