We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert, why did you pursue a creative career?
From a very early age, I have always been interested in filmmaking. I would write scripts as a hobby in my teenage years. The idea of pursuing a career in the entertainment industry has stuck with me since that time, and about five years ago, I just told myself it was time to stop letting the challenges and responsibilities of everyday life keep me from pursuing my passion. I didn’t want another decade to pass by without trying, so I began to write scripts based on what I would like to see as a movie-goer, taking inspiration from film and tv movies that I loved growing up. In the last few years, I have made many acquaintances in the industry, and I consistently work to grow my connection base, while building my slate of projects.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a author, editor, and screenwriter from North Carolina. For the last twenty-three years I resided in the small Piedmont-Triad community town of Lewisville. In September 2025 however, my family and I relocated fifty-five minutes away to the small city in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Mt. Airy, known as the real-life inspiration for the fictional town of Mayberry from “The Andy Griffith Show,” and the birthplace of Andy Griffith. My goal is to one day see the scripts that I write brought to the big screen. In promoting my work, I also strive to bring awareness of the history and culture of North Carolina, particularly the folklore and legends from around the state, showcasing these stories for modern, mainstream audiences. The stories in the Home Grown Horrors series takes inspiration from actual legends, and the feature length scripts I write also take inspiration from movies that I grew up watching and love even more now as an adult. It’s my passion for classic films that shape and mold my own creativity in crafting unique and compelling stories.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Boone, West Jefferson, Mt. Airy and all the small towns and cities in the foothills and Blue Ridge mountains are huge tourist destinations, in all of the state’s four seasons, as well as Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Raleigh, Asheville, Southport and Wilmington. NC is rich in culture and scenery, and hundreds, if not thousands of movies and tv shows have been filmed here. Skiing is abundant in the mountains during winter. The beaches along the Outer Banks are great getaways for families of all ages. The Autumn Leaves and Apple Festivals are awesome events to visit during the fall time of the year. All of these places and events are great to visit, and deserve checking out. I personally encourage any and everyone to visit the state and these great cities/towns at least once. It would make for a great time, especially for movie buffs.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The task of breaking into the entertainment industry is both a challenging and frustrating journey. There have been and still are acquaintances who have supported and championed my work since the beginning. Some are loved ones, while others are ones I have grown close to way beyond the written page. My beautiful wife Debbie, who is the love of my life and best friend, is one person who has stuck by me and supported me in all my artistic and creative endeavors. Two others, Brian M. Wixson and Laurence E. Gibbs, are gentlemen that I have since become very good friends with, and the three of us have entered into a business partnership. Brian is an actor and writer from Lincoln Park, New Jersey, and Laurence is an actor, writer, and director from San Diego, California. These guys are very kind, down to earth, and very talented. Besides collaborating with me, they also have worked very hard in their creative pursuits over the years. I hope that in the near future, all of our endeavors come to fruition.
