Meet Michael (Sisqo) Francisco | Performer/ choreographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael (Sisqo) Francisco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael (Sisqo), why did you pursue a creative career?
I actually started by accident. Ive always loved performing but I didnt start my dance training until I was 21 years old. I was very lucky to meet some off the best teachers and choreographers at the time and everything just kind of fell into place. Now looking back I cant imagine having a different life or career as ive been given the opportunity to do what I love as a living and im forever grateful for that.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Though I wouldn’t consider my work super artistic i do believe that what I create is genuine. Im moving into a new space in my career as im getting older where I want my choreograpghy to feel good to the person/ people doing it. Whether that’s in class or performing. Of course different situations call for different sort of things but I believe that if a dancer is enjoying the movement and having fun then that translates to the audience also sharing in that feeling.
I used to always try and make choreo that looked good but I realised that that doesnt always mean it FEELS good. Now I just want to dance and share my joy of movement with everyone and I think that translates with my choreography.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
1. PROBABLY A BEACH, im more into quieter beaches than the main tourist ones in sydney. My favourite is a small one near Taronga Zoo. Its quiet and yoy can see the whole city from the beach. Funnily enough I dont actually know the name of it I just know how to get there haha
2. DUTI STUDIOS: who wouldn’t wanna dance?
3. SYDNEY KINGS GAME: i grew up loving basketball and now I choreograph the dance crew for the team. The atmosphere is amazing at these games plus they would get to see me perform haha
4. Id take them everywhere to eat. I love going out for food I couldnt choose just one place haha

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few.
MY SISTERS: Lora and Max Francisco. They really pushed me and encouraged me to be the best dancer/ brother/ person I could be.
URBAN DANCE CENTRE (SYDNEY): this studio no longer exists but this was where I started my dance and teaching journey. The owner Juliet’s Verne gave me my first real teaching opportunity.
DUTI STUDIOS: this is where i currently spend most of my days dancing whether it be teaching class or rehearsing. My home away from home.
Theres many more names i could mention but I would be here forever. This journey and my career wasnt just built by myself but by everyone around me. Some names i do want to mention are the Sydney Kings Dance Crew, SambaBrazil, Rosemarie Romeo, Lana Borisova, Dom Rodriguez.
