Meet Lucy Rendler-Kaplan | Founder of Arkay Marketing & PR

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucy Rendler-Kaplan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It’s so funny because I started my company almost on a fluke! (or a temper tantrum gone wrong!) I was working in-house at a brand as the marketing and social media director – and we had a publicist on retainer. The founder of my company wasn’t terribly happy with her and the cost of her, so I went to him and said, “I think I can do this. I have zero experience in PR, but I can do this.” Luckily, he either really believed in me OR was just calling my bluff, but here I am with my own PR company now, going strong in our 18th year!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What I think really sets my business apart is that it’s mainly me working for each of my clients. They aren’t getting “sold” to by me and then their account worked on by other people that they haven’t seen, don’t know, or have too many clients. I truly believe in collaboration and that my work is nothing without the teams of people I work with around the country to get the best results for each of our clients.
My clients are more than work – they’re friends and some have been with me as long as my oldest friendships!
I’d love for future clients to know how much I truly love what I do. Work is something I am constantly excited about. In a niche that often gets people jaded or cynical, I look at each day with an open mind and see it as having endless possibilities to get more, better work done.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Anyone that knows me, knows my motto: “If you ever have an extra second in Los Angeles, get yourself to Venice Beach.”
I absolutely love LA. The people are some of the nicest and friendliest in the world to me, and it’s such a gorgeous place. I love showing people the Original Farmers Market, the Venice Canals (it’s amazing how many people that grew up in LA have never been!) and we’d definitely be hitting up Sushi Dan and the Red Lion.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I never really felt I had mentors or bosses that cared about my career development until I was working at O.N.E. Coconut Water. The founders were a married couple at the time and they really let me expand my knowledge of marketing, PR and social media without much oversight. I also was so incredibly lucky that I met some amazing people there that also took chances on me – Magical Elves Productions brought me into the world of product placement and introduced me to the world of celebrity seeding, giving me contacts and experiences I never would have dreamed about being exposed to!
