We had the good fortune of connecting with Mengyi Grace Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mengyi Grace, why did you pursue a creative career?
From a young age, I had the opportunity to explore different creative mediums, such as painting, drawing, calligraphy, etc, and that’s the time I developed a strong interest in art, especially acrylic on canvas. Over time and through living across cultures in China, the U.S., and the UK, I came to realize that art is more than just a visual medium, but a form of narrative expression that allows me to share a cross-cultural perspective and communicate stories that are beyond language.

Art since then became my way of building bridges across cultures, much like flowers and elements of nature that exist beyond borders. These experiences inspired my works such as Velvet Sage in Memory. Seeing velvet sage bloom in Beijing was one of my core childhood memories and every time encountering it in the States creates a powerful and special sense of continuity and connection across cultures.

Ultimately, I translate my memories and the influences that have shaped me into paintings through the exploration of nature, including flowers, trees, water, and animals to reflect the layered identity of my cross-cultural heritage.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a cross-cultural contemporary artist specializing in acrylic on canvas. Blending modern impressionism and traditional Chinese art, my paintings often reflect my cross-cultural heritages, personal memories and stories through the lens of narrative storytelling.

My current main series “When Modern Impressionism Meets Traditional Chinese Art” builds a connection between my personal memories and objects to present a narrative space. Nature and landscape are the usual themes of my artwork, including flowers, trees, birds, and water, as both subject and metaphor. I honor my roots while embracing new influences to create a healing process with balanced color palettes featuring various green hues as well as vivid pink and purple shades to deliver spaces of reflection and healing. Each composition is carefully constructed with openness and intentional strokes, inviting viewers to slow down, breathe, and enter the subtle poetry of time that flows between past, present and future. Through symbolic landscapes and layered storytelling, the paintings encourage viewers to connect not only with my own memories, but also with their own to look inward, to rediscover forgotten memories, to imagine new meanings, and to feel connected across cultures, generations, and emotional geographies.

Finding inspiration is not always easy along the creative journey. However, living across different countries has become the foundation of my inspiration and one of the elements that sets my work apart. My cross-cultural experience shapes both my perspective and my visual language, allowing me to translate memory, identity, and heritage into contemporary narratives. I grew up influenced by the 24 solar terms in traditional Chinese culture, which observe the subtle rhythms of nature throughout the year. One of my core artistic concepts is beautifully influenced by Xiao Man (“Little Fullness”), which is a seasonal marker in the traditional Chinese calendar that represents the moment when grains begin to ripen and nature gently swells with promise. This philosophy of restrained abundance and balance deeply influenced me. It inspired my solo exhibition, Blooming in Fantasy, which serves as a layered poetic metaphor for beauty in progress, balance, and quiet anticipation that embodying a sense of fullness grounded in harmony.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week-long art trip has always been at the top of the list for me and my friends. I would start with Collecting Impressionism at LACMA, which is a must-visit exhibition to unpack the narratives of French Impressionism. From there, we can continue exploring some more institutions including, The Broad, Hammer, The Getty, Hilbert Museum of California, and OCMA are also on the list. Between museum visits, we would stop by some of my favorite bakeries, such as Out of Ordi, Bag of Cakes, and Seed and Water Bakery.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am deeply grateful for every opportunity I have received along this creative journey. I would especially like to thank the Sasse Museum of Art for offering me the opportunity to make my U.S. museum debut and for presenting my work to audiences not only nationally but also across more than 50 countries. This experience marked an incredible milestone in my artist path.

I am also incredibly honored to have been featured again in Beijing, my hometown, at the Xinghe Art Museum for the The Horizon of Contemporaneity: Rewritten Reality exhibition for my painting Paperflowers on the Hills. Beijing holds a special place in my heart, not only my hometown, but also as the city where I made my first museum debut at the Sunshine International Museum, the largest comprehensive art museum in China. Exhibiting at Xinghe Art Museum in Beijing feels beyond meaningful as the institution has long been dedicated to the academic research of contemporary art, exhibition production, and public engagement, and continually fostering meaningful artistic communication. In many different ways, presenting my work there feels like a rewriting of reality: my painting brings together modern impressionistic sensibilities with elements of traditional Chinese art, creating a cross-cultural fusion within a space closely dedicated to contemporary discourse. Having my painting returns home feels both surreal and deeply full-circle and I’m profoundly grateful for the recognition and support.
