Meet Kelly Shoul | Adventure Elopement Photographer
We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Shoul and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
In the early years of starting my own business, I was struggling with if I should give up, or keep going. It was my dream to own my own photography business, and to turn it into a successful career. It wasn’t going as well as i’d hope. My bookings weren’t quite there. I had a lot of free time which doesn’t always mean a good thing. My mind kept wandering to, “I don’t want to fail. I don’t want to give up just yet though.” My partner said this to me, “If you never give up, you’ll never fail.” That really stuck with me, and i’m so glad I listened. I feel like every new business will go through growing pains, it’s inevitable. But if you keep the mind set of just keep going, never give up. Keep trying new ways. Put yourself out there more. Just keep trying. I guess for me, I haven’t reached the point of knowing I should give up, because i’ve just kept pushing myself to keep going.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My name is Kelly Shoul and I am the owner of In Love and Adventure Elopement Photography. I help couples elope in the great outdoors, and then take amazing pictures for them. My business came about after my own elopement in 2016. It was during a time that I knew I wanted to start a career in photography but wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to photograph. I was photographing newborns, families, maternity, you name it. But after my own elopement, I had this feeling that there are other couples out there like me. Who knew a traditional wedding wasn’t their thing, and wanted something different for their wedding day, something memorable. At that point I did a bit of research and learned that there was a whole world of adventure elopement photographers. I decided then that was what I wanted to do. I think my own elopement has shaped how I help my couples. I’m an advocate for them, and their biggest cheerleader. It helps them to know that they are working with someone who gets it.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All of my family, friends, and my husband. They really have supported me throughout my entire journey. A community is everything is every part of life, but especially when you’re embarking on a new endeavor. You need all the support you can get.
