We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Hyland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
At my boutique consulting firm, Lapaix Hyland Global Business Consultants, we believe business should be a force for good. While we help organizations grow internationally, our real mission is to build partnerships that improve the health of communities around the world.

Over the past several years, we’ve helped fitness, wellness, and longevity organizations expand into dozens of countries, creating opportunities for coaches, educators, entrepreneurs, and consumers to access better health resources. Whether we’re helping launch educational programs, connecting international partners, advising founders, or serving in fractional leadership roles, our goal is always the same: create sustainable growth that positively impacts people’s lives.

One example I’m especially proud of is our partnership with Hustle Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City. Together with the National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF)—one of the world’s most respected fitness education organizations—we helped launch globally recognized fitness education in this growing region of Southeast Asia. In less than two years, Hustle has become a leading provider of fitness education, creating new career opportunities for coaches while helping raise the standard of health and fitness throughout Vietnam.

Together with our clients and partners, we’ve worked to improve and implement best-in-class health and fitness education, training and recovery equipment, and FitTech everywhere. Our purpose statement says it best: We exist to cultivate passionate partnerships possessing a joyful intentionality leading to an aligned vision of success that will improve the health of the world. Every decision we make is measured against that standard.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lapaix Hyland isn’t a large firm, and that’s by design. We intentionally remain a boutique consultancy so we can stay deeply invested in the people and organizations we work with. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, we’ve built a global network of trusted subject matter experts, strategic partners, and niche resources that allows us to assemble the right team for each opportunity. Our clients get the agility and personal attention of a small firm with access to expertise typically found at larger enterprises.

My journey started more than two decades ago in the fitness industry as a personal trainer and nutrition consultant. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to work across the fitness and wellness industry (and adjacent sectors) in 40+ countries . Along the way, I realized my greatest passion wasn’t simply helping businesses grow, it was helping great founders with meaningful missions go beyond their borders and reach the rest of the world.

Has it been easy? I don’t think it’s just me, running a business is really hard! There are so many people and constituents of those people to try and please. An answer I hope comforts a new entrepreneur… you won’t please everyone. And that’s ok. Constantly invest into your learning and getting better each day and that will bring you comfort when you crash in bed at night from exhaustion. In all seriousness, despite it being challenging at times, when are you working for yourself, you are rewarded deeply in your soul. It makes it all worth it. Especially the things that take months and years to pay off.

I did a deal in India that took just over two years. We met weekly on virtual calls. I felt like I knew these people in Mumbai like friends after such a long time, but had only ever seen them in 2D on Zoom. The time finally came to cut the ribbon and kick off the partnership, I flew out there and it was like a family reunion. We laughed and hugged and celebrated and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life!

Good business is a long game. Reputation compounds like interest. Every interaction matters, and the way you treat people when there’s nothing immediately to gain often determines the opportunities you’ll have years later.

If there’s one thing I’d want people to know about Lapaix Hyland, it’s that we measure success differently. Myself, the other consultants, our junior associates and interns, we have a lot of fun. And we live and work by a set of values. Our Ethos: Above all, we are servant-leaders. We do meaningful work with our clients that bring lucrative returns, through which we give back. We courageously embrace new challenges and enjoy the journey so much that the destination is an afterthought!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When one of my best friends is visiting Los Angeles for the first time, here is an ideal week’s itinerary. I want them to experience the city the way I do: through great food, movement, and the true culture and heart of this amazing city. This agenda is active and focuses on community.

We’d kick things off with a welcome dinner at El Compadre in Hollywood. It’s a LA staple. A truly charming spot with incredible atmosphere, fantastic authentic Mexican food, and a staff that always makes you feel like family. We’d take an evening stroll up to Griffith Observatory to see the sun set. This offers the best, purest view of the city scape view at night.

For brunch the next day, we’d head to Vine Street Café, a small family-owned joint where my wife and I used to eat next to our first apartment in Hollywood. Their Turkey Pesto Melt is legendary, although I’ve never had anything there that wasn’t outstanding. They use the best ingredients for all of their meals, and their tea and coffee is off the charts too! All local produce.

Because Los Angeles is home to some of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the world, we’d head over to train at Renzo Gracie Los Angeles. Grappling is not only a physical workout, it challenges you mentally with problem solving and having to overcome high stress situations, but is an absolute blast! After getting some work in on the mats, we’d do a multicultural to-go potluck. We’d order takeout dinner at Bossa Nova (Refueling with Brazilian cuisine after our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Then we’d swing close by and would grab some options at the historic Formosa Café, which serves some of my favorite Chinese food in the city. Perhaps the Crispy Pot Stickers and Szechuan Wings. Then we’d go to my rooftop spot to people-watch and take in LA vibes while we eat our feast.

To balance out the caloric intake, we’d get our morning workout in at JLT Performance, where professional athletes, celebrities, and everyday people all train together in an incredibly welcoming environment. Then we’d slow things down with an afternoon at Griffith Park—throwing a frisbee, grabbing fresh fruit from one of the fruit carts, feeding nuts to the park squirrels (they’re practically celebs themselves), and enjoying one of the best green spaces the city has to offer.

For me, that’s Los Angeles at its best: incredible food, world-class training, beautiful outdoor spaces, and communities that make you feel like you belong.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without question, I’d like to recognize two of the people who have had the greatest influence on my life—my wife, Maricris Lapaix, and my identical twin brother, Nolan Hyland.

Maricris is my greatest teammate, biggest supporter, and one of the most purpose-driven people I’ve ever met. Through her global wellness brand, Move with Maricris, she has an incredible ability to inspire others through movement, making health and fitness approachable, joyful, and sustainable. Whether she’s coaching, creating unforgettable wellness experiences, speaking on stage, or making hilarious reels on Instagram, she reminds me every day that success isn’t just measured by what we accomplish, but by how we make people feel. Maricris challenges me to become a better husband, father, and leader. Our shared mission of improving the health of the world has become stronger because of her. We’ve had so many wild memories and moments and have been together for less than 5 years (collectively dating, engaged, and married). Her and I have traveled the world together to further life-changing health and wellness protocols for others. On a number of different occasions, we’ve put everything we own (less a few suitcases) into a storage locker in Hollywood for 4-6 months and adventured on multi-country trips for our businesses (and personal adventures). We would return, find a new apartment in Los Angeles and then start planning our next international adventure. We now have a new addition to the family: 14 month old Cairo Lapaix Hyland. He’s the absolute best thing to ever happen to us. We named him after where our love story began in Cairo, Egypt. Aside from my wife, the only other person I’m as close to is a dude I shared the womb with.

My identical twin brother, Nolan, has been my tag-team partner since the beginning. Our origin story of into fitness came about through the impetus of martial arts (a.k.a. savagely beating the hell out of each other). I remember practicing all the stuff on TV they specifically warned you not to do at home, at home with with my twin. We trained and competed in karate, wrestling, and boxing because we wanted to be Ninja Turtles or professional wrestlers one day. We never found Ooze to transform us into Ninja Turtles, but our continued passion for fitness and martial arts launched our careers at age 17 when we became personal trainers and nutrition consultants at GNC in our hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. There would be competitions at work for who could sell the most the protein powder, or Gold Card memberships in a day or a in a month. That really lit our competitiveness on fire! If twin brother won, I’d be bummed for a bit but then realize, “wait this guys is basically me, so I kinda won too.” It was the same when I won… my success was his success. Nolan has been there at my highest of victories, and lowest of defeats, he champions my great ideas and calls me out when I can do better (even if it turns into impromptu grappling matches at family events and our mom yells at us to not break the furniture)… but he always has my back. Much of the resilience, work ethic, and competitive spirit that has shaped my career was forged through our “twinship”, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.

If there’s one lesson they’ve both taught me, it’s that the people closest to us often have the greatest impact on who we become. I’m incredibly grateful to be building this journey alongside both of them and the many others that contribute to my success.
